They pick a line, order boxes in three inch increments, and fill the leftovers with filler strips. A custom cabinet shop starts from your measurements instead, and the difference shows up in four places. - **Custom, semi-custom and stock.** Stock comes in fixed widths and a short list of doors, and it is the right answer for a rental or a laundry closet. Semi-custom adds finishes and a few modified sizes. Custom means the box is built to the number we measured, which earns its money in odd rooms, tall ceilings and anywhere a filler would sit in the middle of the sightline. - **Box construction.** Plywood cases against particleboard is the most consequential line on the quote, and it matters more here than in a dry climate. Particleboard swells when it gets wet and never comes back, so a slow drip under a sink turns into a replaced cabinet. Plywood dries out and holds a hinge screw. - **Face frame or frameless.** A face frame runs hardwood across the front, stiffening the box and giving a hinge something solid to land in. Frameless drops the frame for wider openings and a little more space. We build both: face frame suits traditional homes and any inset door, frameless suits flat slab modern kitchens. - **Door overlay.** Partial overlay leaves frame showing between doors and reads as builder grade. Full overlay covers nearly all of it and is the current default. Inset sets the door inside the frame, flush, at a reveal near 3/32 of an inch, which is the most expensive and the least forgiving choice in a humid climate. ## How a Cabinet Commission Runs 1. 1 ### Call or send photos Rough dimensions and a budget range are enough to start. Tell us whether it is a build, a reface or a repair you are after. 2. 2 ### Measure and quote We measure, check whether the walls are block or frame, check the floor for level, and quote with species, box material, door style, overlay and finish spelled out. 3. 3 ### Deposit and schedule On approval we take a deposit for material and put you on the schedule.
