Your doors close square, the boxes are solid, and the only thing wrong is the color. Cabinet refinishing in Jacksonville, FL is the least invasive of the [cabinet upgrades we handle](/services/cabinet-maker/): nothing is thrown away, nothing is rebuilt, and the wood you own comes back a different color under a harder finish than it left the factory with.

## What Cabinet Refinishing Includes and What It Does Not

Refinishing changes the surface and nothing else. Doors and fronts come off, everything is cleaned, sanded, filled or sealed, then sprayed. What it cannot change is shape. A cathedral arch oak door refinished white is still a cathedral arch door.

## Prep, Degreasing and Grain Filling

This is where cheap bids fail, and it is roughly 60 percent of the labor. Cabinets carry a film of cooking grease, worst on the uppers over the range, and paint over that film releases within a year. We degrease every surface, rinse, then sand to break the factory sheen. Conversion varnish on 1990s cabinets is glass-hard, so deglossing happens by hand with abrasive, not by wiping on a liquid and hoping.

Grain filling is the next call: a skim of paste or high-build primer worked into open pores, sanded flat, sometimes twice. It is the difference between a painted door and a painted door that still looks like oak.

## Painting Oak Cabinets Without the Grain Showing

Northeast Florida is full of red oak kitchens from the late 1980s and 1990s, so painting oak cabinets is the most common version of this job we quote. Red oak has deep open pores, and white paint settles into them and highlights every one.

Two honest choices. Fill the grain, roughly $30 to $55 more per door, for a smooth modern finish. Or leave the pores and accept texture, which reads fine in a [farmhouse kitchen](/services/cabinet-maker/farmhouse-cabinetry/) and wrong in a flat modern one. Maple, birch and poplar need no filling. Thermofoil is a poor bet: the vinyl skin peels instead of holding a coating, and [new doors](/services/cabinet-maker/cabinet-door-replacement/) cost less than fighting it.

## Cabinet Painting: Brush, Roll or Spray

Cabinet painting with a brush leaves stroke marks that catch side light from a kitchen window all day, and a roller leaves stipple. Spray leaves no texture and reaches the inside corners of a shaker rail without pooling. Doors and fronts go to our shop and get sprayed flat, the only way to lay a level coat without runs. Frames are sprayed on site behind plastic with the kitchen sealed and ventilated.

## Cabinet Respray Finishes and Durability

A cabinet respray is only as good as the coating, and wall paint on cabinets is the mistake we get called to fix most.

Finish

Hardness

Cure time

Notes

Waterborne urethane

Very good

7 to 14 days

Low odor, fast recoat, sprayed

Post-catalyzed conversion varnish

Excellent

7 to 10 days

Shop only, hardest, needs ventilation

Precat lacquer

Fair to good

3 to 7 days

Fast, softer, marks near the sink

We favor waterborne urethane or a catalyzed product on doors. Around the sink and dishwasher, softer lacquers are the ones still printing fingerprints a year later.

## Color and Sheen Selection

Sheen matters more than color for how a kitchen wears. Flat shows every hand mark, gloss shows every ripple in an old door, and satin around 25 to 35 units is the practical middle. Light matters too: a north-facing Riverside kitchen pulls a warm white gray, while a Nocatee kitchen with a west slider pushes the same white yellow by four in the afternoon. We spray sample doors and leave them in your kitchen for two days first.

Two-tone is the cheapest way to keep a refinished kitchen from reading as a paint job: darker bases, lighter uppers, or a darker [island](/services/cabinet-maker/kitchen-island-cabinetry/).

## Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing Step by Step

1. We identify the existing finish and test a hidden spot.
2. Hardware and doors come off, labeled by opening.
3. Degrease, sand, fill and prime, doors in the shop and frames on site.
4. Sample doors sit in your kitchen for a two day color check.
5. Frames sprayed behind containment, doors given two to three coats.
6. Doors rehang, hinges adjusted, reveals set even at 1/8 in.

Most kitchen cabinet refinishing runs 5 to 10 working days, and your sink and range stay usable throughout.

## Cure Time and Putting the Kitchen Back

Dry and cured are different, and this is the part homeowners get wrong. A waterborne finish is dry to the touch in an hour but keeps hardening for two to three weeks. Load plates on day three and the shelf prints into the finish. Shut a door on day four and the faces can block, sticking together and pulling paint off.

Our Jacksonville rule: soft items day three, dishes day seven, no shelf liner until week three. At 75 percent indoor humidity in August a finish cures noticeably slower than at 50, so we keep the air conditioning running through the job and add a dehumidifier if the house has been sitting empty.

## Cabinet Refinishing Cost in Jacksonville

Scope

Typical range

Vanity or small laundry run, 6 to 10 doors

$900 to $1,900

Standard kitchen, 20 to 25 doors and 8 drawers

$3,500 to $7,500

Same kitchen with oak grain filling

$5,000 to $9,500

Add: new [pulls and knobs](/services/cabinet-maker/cabinet-hardware-installation/)

$8 to $16 per hole

Three things move cabinet refinishing cost: door and drawer count, whether the grain gets filled, and paint versus a stain change. Stripping to bare wood is the expensive path, because oak sealed for thirty years does not give up color evenly. These are typical Jacksonville ranges, and a real number takes seeing your doors.

## Why Jacksonville Homeowners Choose Klein Carpentry

4.8 ★

### Rated by 51 Google Reviewers

Klein Carpentry holds a 4.8 star average across [51 Google reviews](https://maps.google.com/?cid=7803379908473648836&g_mp=CiVnb29nbGUubWFwcy5wbGFjZXMudjEuUGxhY2VzLkdldFBsYWNlEAIYBCAA). Homeowners keep mentioning the same things: fast replies, crews who show up when they say they will, and attention to detail. Every cabinet refinishing project gets a written quote, a clear schedule and a daylight walkthrough at the end.

Humidity

### Built for Florida's Climate

Wood gains and loses moisture with the air around it, and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's [Wood Handbook](https://research.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/62200) shows how much it swells and shrinks as a result. We plan every cabinet refinishing job for that movement: stable sheet goods, acclimated lumber, moisture-resistant material near slabs and wet rooms, and joints with room to move.

3 Heights

### Fit to Your Actual Walls

Jacksonville homes range from plaster and concrete block to square new construction. We measure each opening at the floor, mid height and ceiling before building, then scribe the finished work to the wall. Depending on the piece, it is built in our shop and brought in finished or built on site in your home, so the fit stays tight either way.

- > My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Klein Carpentry. We recently moved into our new home, and as most homeowners, we wanted to put our personal touch on it. Inspired by so many ideas from Pinterest and HGTV, like so many others, I had several ideas of how I envision what I wanted for our custom built-in. I spoke with Ray, who could also see my vision and transfer it to a 3D program for us to see visually. Well, I can't say enough of what a fantastic job both Ray and Nathan did. From the start of our project to the very end, they exceeded our expectations in every way possible. Words can't describe how their professionalism, commitment, and craftsmanship are genuine. Both Ray and Nathan are genuinely a pleasure to work with. They are two kind, sincere gentlemen who care about their work and the client's vision. They are punctual and reliable and went above and beyond to ensure that my built-ins were completed on time. With this said, we could not be happier with how they turned out. I can finally display my beautiful Disney collectible, which I had been put away for far too long. I highly recommend Klein Carpentry to anyone considering having any work done in theirs.

- > Very happy with the professional work done by Klein Carpentry. We had wood accents done for the entrance way, great room and master bedroom. Fantastic craftsmanship and took the time to make it look perfect. Also had ceiling beams placed in the great room and master bedroom. They really complete both rooms. Lastly had wood accents for the half bath in the living area. Made a noticeable difference. Would highly recommend Klein Carpentry, highly detailed and professional.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Will my refinished cabinets hold up over a dishwasher in Florida?

They will if the coating is right and the edges are sealed. Dishwasher steam is the hardest thing in a kitchen on a finish, so we spray the bottom edges of those doors as carefully as the faces and avoid soft lacquers there.

Can you spray inside my house without the whole place smelling?

Yes. Doors and fronts are sprayed in our shop, and only the frames are sprayed on site behind plastic containment with ventilation running. Low odor waterborne products make that workable in an occupied home.

Can you match the stain on my existing trim or a new island?

Matching an existing stain is possible but never exact, since old finishes amber with age. We make sample doors and have you approve one under your own lights before anything gets sprayed.

How long before I can put my dishes back?

Soft items can go back around day three, dishes around day seven, and shelf liner should wait until week three. The finish is dry long before it is cured, and weight on an uncured surface leaves a permanent print.

Does August humidity mean I should wait until winter?

No, but the air conditioning needs to run. We work through Jacksonville summers by conditioning the space and adding a dehumidifier when needed, which keeps cure times close to normal.
