Your garage is not a room. It is a covered slab that sits at 95 degrees and heavy humidity in August and takes a wind driven puddle under the door twice a summer. Garage cabinets in Jacksonville, FL have to be spec'd for that, which is why this is a different build from the [cabinetry we make for conditioned rooms](/services/cabinet-maker/). The first decision is not door style: it is what the box is made of, what it hangs on, and how far it sits off the slab.

## What Survives an Unconditioned Florida Garage

The products that fail are the ones that drink moisture and never let go. Particleboard is the worst offender and the standard carcass in most big box garage systems. Once the melamine skin gets nicked at an edge, humid air does the rest: soft bottoms, shelf pins tearing out, doors that stop closing square. MDF is no better, since it has no grain to resist swelling and cracks the paint film along every edge.

Material

In a Jacksonville garage

Where we use it

Particleboard

Poor, swells at any exposed edge

Nowhere

MDF

Poor, edge swell and paint cracking

Nowhere

Prefinished birch or maple plywood

Good, stable and holds screws

Standard carcass

Marine grade plywood

Very good, waterproof glue line

Base boxes, bottoms

PVC or HDPE panel

Excellent, absorbs nothing

Toe kicks, base within 6 in of slab

Sealed poplar or maple

Good when sealed all six faces

Face frames, doors, bench edges

Our standard is a prefinished plywood carcass, a PVC bottom, every cut end sealed, and a satin enamel on anything painted. Flat paint holds tire dust and never cleans up.

## Anchoring to Block Walls

Most Jacksonville garages are concrete block, and many have no framing on the exterior walls beyond thin furring strips. That changes everything about hanging cabinets, because there is no stud to find. Screw into a furring strip and you are anchored to a 1x2 held on with a few pins, and a loaded upper cabinet pulls it straight off the block.

We anchor into the block itself with sleeve or wedge anchors set into the solid web rather than the hollow cell, and never into a mortar joint. Mortar is softer than block and it is the first thing to crumble.

Wall type

What we anchor with

Practical load

CBS block, solid web

3/8 in sleeve anchor, 2.5 in embedment

Heavy

CBS block, hollow cell

Toggle masonry anchor

Light duty only

Furring over block

We go through to block

Not rated alone

Wood framed wall

Structural screw at 16 in

Standard cabinet load

Truss or joist above

Lag or structural screw

Overhead rack load

Anchors have a minimum edge distance, so we lay out cabinet backs to keep them clear of block edges and control joints.

## Garage Storage Cabinets: Base, Wall and Overhead

Layout for garage storage cabinets starts with your car, not your wall. Open the vehicle door fully and mark the floor, because everything you build lives outside that line.

- Base cabinets, 24 in deep: most storage per foot, real work surface
- Base cabinets, 18 in deep: keeps a walkway open in a tight two car bay
- Wall cabinets, 12 to 16 in deep: clears a hood and most door swings
- Tall cabinets, 84 to 90 in: long handled tools and a shop vac

Overhead garage storage belongs above the hood, never above a walkway. Racks hang from trusses or joists at 78 to 84 inches off the slab and never under the path of the open door panel, so check that clearance before anyone drills. Hurricane shutter panels are the heaviest overhead load in this market, so say so at the measure and we spec the rack for it.

## Garage Workbench Height, Depth and Top

Use

Height

Depth

Top

Standing hand work

36 to 38 in

24 to 30 in

1.5 in laminated maple or doubled ply

Power tool station

34 in, matched to tool bed

30 to 36 in

Sacrificial 3/4 in MDF over ply

Potting and dirty work

36 in

24 in

HDPE or sealed solid surface

For most people a garage workbench at 36 inches is right, the same as a kitchen counter. Over six feet tall, go to 38. Depth past 30 inches becomes unreachable, so we would rather build a 24 inch bench with a slatwall back than a 36 inch pile. Put power strips along the back rail at the design stage.

## Floor Clearance and Moisture at the Slab

Water gets in. It blows under the door in a squall, it tracks off a truck, and a hosed floor sends it everywhere. Concrete wicks moisture year round here too, so a plywood toe kick on the slab is a wet toe kick.

Two fixes. Wall hang the base cabinets and hold the bottom 4 to 6 inches off the floor so you can sweep or hose under them, or build a PVC toe kick that does not care, set on shims and sealed. On a block wall garage we prefer wall hung, since we are anchoring into block anyway.

Most slabs slope toward the door, which helps drainage and hurts cabinet level. We shim to level, leave a reveal so the gap reads as intentional, and hold an air gap behind the backs because block sweats on a humid morning.

## Garage Organization That Holds

Good garage organization is deciding what lives at eye level. Weekly items belong between 30 and 60 inches, bulk and seasonal gear goes up top, and chemicals and paint go behind a latched door.

Drawers beat shelves for anything small, since a 6 inch drawer on a 100 pound full extension glide shows you everything at once. We spec ball bearing glides out here rather than undermount hardware, because they tolerate dust, and add [soft-close hardware](/services/cabinet-maker/soft-close-cabinet-installation/) on the doors if you want it.

## How We Build and Install Your Garage Cabinetry

1. We measure the bay and confirm wall construction with a hidden test drill
2. We mark your vehicle door swing and lay out around it
3. You get a layout with sizes, bench height, material spec and a price
4. Boxes are built in our shop, edges sealed, hardware fitted
5. Install day: anchors into block, cabinets hung and leveled, bench top fitted
6. Toe kick, fillers, caulk and a walkthrough

A single wall installs in a day. A two wall build with bench and racks runs two to three days.

## Garage Cabinet Cost in Jacksonville

Scope

Typical installed range

8 ft wall, base and upper cabinets

$2,600 to $4,500

12 ft wall with workbench

$4,500 to $8,000

Full wall with tall cabinets and bench, 16 to 20 ft

$8,000 to $15,000

Overhead ceiling rack, per 4x8 installed

$400 to $900

Two wall build with slatwall and drawer banks

$14,000 and up

Three things move it: drawers versus doors, carcass grade, and how much anchoring the block walls demand. These are typical Jacksonville ranges, and a real number takes measuring your garage.

Homeowners keep mentioning the same things: fast replies, crews who show up when they say they will, and attention to detail. Every garage cabinets project gets a written quote, a clear schedule and a daylight walkthrough at the end.

### Built for Florida's Climate

Wood gains and loses moisture with the air around it, and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's [Wood Handbook](https://research.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/62200) shows how much it swells and shrinks as a result. We plan every garage cabinets job for that movement: stable sheet goods, acclimated lumber, moisture-resistant material near slabs and wet rooms, and joints with room to move.

### Fit to Your Actual Walls

Jacksonville homes range from plaster and concrete block to square new construction. We measure each opening at the floor, mid height and ceiling before building, then scribe the finished work to the wall. Depending on the piece, it is built in our shop and brought in finished or built on site in your home, so the fit stays tight either way.

- > My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Klein Carpentry. We recently moved into our new home, and as most homeowners, we wanted to put our personal touch on it. Inspired by so many ideas from Pinterest and HGTV, like so many others, I had several ideas of how I envision what I wanted for our custom built-in. I spoke with Ray, who could also see my vision and transfer it to a 3D program for us to see visually. Well, I can't say enough of what a fantastic job both Ray and Nathan did. From the start of our project to the very end, they exceeded our expectations in every way possible. Words can't describe how their professionalism, commitment, and craftsmanship are genuine. Both Ray and Nathan are genuinely a pleasure to work with. They are two kind, sincere gentlemen who care about their work and the client's vision. They are punctual and reliable and went above and beyond to ensure that my built-ins were completed on time. With this said, we could not be happier with how they turned out. I can finally display my beautiful Disney collectible, which I had been put away for far too long. I highly recommend Klein Carpentry to anyone considering having any work done in theirs.

- > Very happy with the professional work done by Klein Carpentry. We had wood accents done for the entrance way, great room and master bedroom. Fantastic craftsmanship and took the time to make it look perfect. Also had ceiling beams placed in the great room and master bedroom. They really complete both rooms. Lastly had wood accents for the half bath in the living area. Made a noticeable difference. Would highly recommend Klein Carpentry, highly detailed and professional.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Will garage cabinets warp in Jacksonville humidity?

Not if the material is right. Warping comes from particleboard and MDF, which absorb moisture at every raw edge. A prefinished plywood carcass with sealed edges and a PVC bottom holds its shape year round.

Should I use wall cabinets or overhead ceiling racks?

Both, for different things. Wall cabinets hold what you reach for weekly, and ceiling racks hold bulk and seasonal items like hurricane shutters. Make sure the rack clears the open door panel before anything gets drilled.

Can you build a workbench and cabinets as one run?

Yes, and it is the better way. A continuous run lets the bench top run through as one surface and keeps drawer banks aligned under it.

How do you hang cabinets on a concrete block garage wall?

We anchor into the block with sleeve anchors set in the solid web, never into a mortar joint and never into furring strips alone. Furring is thin trim stock and it pulls off the wall under a loaded cabinet.

How high off the floor should garage cabinets sit?

We hold the bottom 4 to 6 inches above the slab, by wall hanging the boxes or using a PVC toe kick. Water blows under a garage door in a storm, and concrete wicks moisture year round.

Do I need a permit for garage cabinets in Duval County?

Non structural cabinetry generally does not. Adding circuits at a bench, or moving anything mechanical, does, and the licensed trade handles it.
