When the door is closed, the door face and the frame face are in the same plane, and a thin gap runs all the way around the door. That gap is the reveal, and the industry range is about 3/32 to 1/8 inch. Anything much tighter and the door binds the first humid week. Anything wider than 5/32 and the eye starts reading it as a mistake instead of a detail. Overlay doors hide everything. A full overlay door can be built a sixteenth out of square and nobody will ever know, because it floats over the frame. Inset door cabinets hide nothing. The frame must be square, the door must be square, the box must be plumb after install, and every one of those has to stay that way through a Jacksonville summer. ## Inset vs Overlay: What You Actually Get The inset vs overlay decision is the biggest cost lever in the whole project, bigger than species and bigger than door style. The face frame stiles are still there, and now the door sits inside them, so a 15 inch wide inset opening yields noticeably less clear width than the same box in full overlay. Conditioned interior humidity in Jacksonville runs roughly 40 to 45 percent in the dry months and 55 to 60 percent through a coastal summer, and it climbs higher in an older house without tight envelope control or in a beach cottage that gets opened up on good days. Wood follows that number. Solid wood moves across the grain, not along it. On a five piece door the center panel floats in its groove and takes up its own movement, so the width change you actually see at the reveal comes only from the two stiles. Two 2 1/4 inch flatsawn stiles across a humidity swing like ours will move on the order of a thirty second of an inch combined, sometimes a bit more in a wide flatsawn board. That is why a 3/32 reveal built in February can become a rubbing door in July. So we do four things differently here than a shop in Denver would: - **We set the reveal to the season.** Doors hung in the dry months get the wide end of the range, closer to 1/8 inch. Doors hung in a humid August get closer to 3/32, because they are already swollen and will shrink. - **We choose species for stability.** Quartersawn stock moves roughly half as much across its width as flatsawn, and that is the single cheapest insurance on an inset job. - **We seal all six sides.** Top edge, bottom edge, both long edges, front and back all get finish. An unfinished top edge is a moisture pump, and it is the most common shortcut in painted cabinetry. - **We let the material acclimate.** Material sits in the shop, and finished doors sit in the house before final hinge adjustment where the schedule allows. Inset in an unconditioned garage or a lanai cabinet is a bad idea no matter how carefully it is built, because the swing out there is not 15 points of humidity, it is 50. Mixing inset doors with overlay drawer fronts to save money reads as a compromise from across the room, so we generally talk clients out of it. Face frame stock for inset work wants to be beefier than standard. We build frames from 3/4 by 2 inch material minimum, joined with mortise and tenon or heavy dowels rather than pocket screws alone, because a frame that racks a sixteenth ruins a reveal that is only a sixteenth wide. It is the most traditional version of the style, and it suits older homes in Avondale, Ortega and San Marco. The bead does two useful things. It catches light and makes the reveal read as intentional, and it visually absorbs small variation in the gap, which is genuinely helpful in a humid climate. The tradeoff is cost and repairability: the bead is milled into the frame, so a damaged bead means repairing the frame in place. Expect beaded inset to run about 10 to 15 percent above plain inset. Three way adjustment means a door that starts rubbing in August gets corrected with a screwdriver in ninety seconds instead of a shop visit. Old Jacksonville houses are rarely square, and we would rather find that with a level in hand than at install. Shop drawings come next, with every reveal, frame width and hinge specified. Build and finish typically runs four to seven weeks. We spray finish in the shop on all six sides before hinges go on. Install is two to five days for a kitchen, and then we fit every door individually, which is the part that takes the time on inset. We also plan a follow up. The cabinets are built square in the shop and then scribed to the walls at install, so the reveals stay honest even when the room is not. We use filler strips and scribe stiles rather than twisting a box to fit an old wall. How often will inset doors need adjusting? Plan on one adjustment in the first year as the cabinets settle through both seasons, and after that only occasionally.
