A true laundry room here is 6 by 8 feet or larger. A laundry closet is a 32 to 36 inch deep bifold opening in a hallway, which is what most 1960s to 1980s Southside, Arlington and Mandarin houses have. Bifolds stack into the opening and eat four to five inches per side, so cabinetry run wall to wall blocks them. We hold the cabinets inside the stack line or swap to a slider. ## Sizing Laundry Cabinets Around the Machines Most laundry cabinets that fail do so because someone used a nominal dimension instead of the actual machine. Add four to six inches behind for the vent elbow, water box and hoses, which means 33 to 34 inches of real depth. With a top loader the lid is the whole game. Twenty two inches of clearance puts an upper cabinet no lower than about 58 inches off the floor. A solid surface, butcher block or quartz top across both machines gives you 4 to 5 feet of folding space where none existed, at 37 to 38 inches. A 13 to 15 inch storage pedestal raises the machine top to about 50 inches, which is too high to fold on. Three choices: - Skip the pedestals and build drawers elsewhere in the run - Keep them and put the folding space on a separate 36 inch counter beside the machines - Build a site made platform at 6 to 8 inches, which lifts the door without killing counter height We leave the counter removable rather than fastened hard on both ends. Most drop-in laundry sinks want a 24 to 30 inch cabinet, and we build the interior around the trap: a U shaped shelf, a false drawer front up top, and a sealed bottom with a lip so a drip stays out. A hanging rod is cheap and useful. Give it 42 to 48 inches of clear space below, and mount it 12 inches off the wall so hangers hang straight. On the dirty side, pull out hampers beat baskets. A 15 inch cabinet takes one bin, a 30 inch fits two so darks and lights sort themselves, on ball bearing glides since a hamper gets yanked. Plan on 20 to 22 inches of clear height for the lid to open fully, which puts an upper cabinet no lower than about 58 inches off the floor. A shallow 12 inch box often clears where a 15 inch box will not. Will laundry cabinets hold up in Florida humidity? They will when they are built for it. We use plywood carcasses rather than particleboard, seal every cut edge, and put PVC or marine ply at the floor. The failures we replace are almost always a swollen particleboard bottom under a washer that leaked. Do I need a plumber for a utility sink cabinet? Yes, if the sink is going somewhere new. We build and set the cabinet and cut for the sink, and a licensed plumber makes the connections. If a laundry tub is already there, we build around the existing rough-in. Can you build a folding counter over my machines? Yes, if they are front loaders. Side by side front loaders take a counter at about 37 to 38 inches, which folds comfortably. Pedestals raise the tops to roughly 50 inches, so we either remove them or move the folding surface beside the machines. Can you put real cabinets in a laundry closet?
