Most people call about the gap. The wall stops, the ceiling starts, and that corner sits unfinished. Crown molding installation in Jacksonville, FL is one of the [interior trim carpentry](/services/carpentry/) services we run year-round, and what separates crown that looks built-in from crown that looks stuck on is profile, prep, and the hands cutting it.

## Crown Molding Profiles and Sizing to Ceiling Height

Profile is the shape in cross section, and size matters just as much. A 3 inch crown in a 10-foot room disappears, and a 7 inch crown in an 8-foot hall swallows it.

Ceiling height

Crown size

Profiles that work

8 ft

3 to 4.5 in

Cove, small ogee, flat stepped

9 ft

4.5 to 6 in

Ogee, dentil, cove and cap

10 ft and up

6 to 9 in

Built up three piece

Cove reads quiet and modern, ogee is the traditional S-curve most homes wear well, and built-up crown stacks pieces for a shadow line that makes a nine-foot room feel taller.

## Where to Install Crown Molding, Room by Room

You do not need to install crown molding everywhere, and we often talk people out of it. Public rooms earn it: living room, dining room, entry and primary bedroom. Kitchens are the argument worth having, since upper cabinets with their own cabinet crown already make wall crown look busy.

## Installing Crown Over Textured and Popcorn Ceilings

This is where crown jobs go wrong in Jacksonville. Houses from the 1970s and 1980s often have heavy knockdown or [popcorn texture](https://www.epa.gov/asbestos/protect-your-family-exposures-asbestos), and molding will not seat flat against it. The crown rides the high spots and leaves a wavy gap caulk cannot hide. We fix it three ways: scrape a clean band at the perimeter, skim the ceiling, or scribe the top edge to the surface.

## Solid Wood, PVC, and Polyurethane in Coastal Humidity

Near the Beaches and in Ponte Vedra, material is a performance decision. Primed finger-jointed pine is standard and fine in conditioned rooms, but it swells and [opens joints where moisture swings](https://research.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/62200).

Material

Moisture resistance

Use

Finger jointed pine

Moderate

Interior rooms, best value

Polyurethane

High

Crisp detail, stable joints

PVC

Very high

Baths, lanais, coastal

Painted crown suits most homes here because paint hides the joints. Stained crown is unforgiving, since every seam shows.

## What Crown Molding Installers Find in Older Jacksonville Homes

Crown molding installers who only work new construction get surprised by Riverside, Avondale and San Marco. Walls are not plumb, ceilings dip, corners are rarely 90 degrees, and plaster over lath is common. Stock crown looks wrong in a 1920s bungalow, so we match what is there from stacked pieces.

Nocatee and St. Johns are the opposite job: thin builder-grade crown in the main rooms only. We pull it, step up to a built-up profile, and carry it into the rooms the builder skipped, usually with new [baseboard](/services/carpentry/baseboard-installation/).

## Why a Trim Carpenter Copes Crown Molding

A trim carpenter installing crown molding does two things a handyman skips. The first is coping: rather than miter both halves of an inside corner and hope the wall is square, we cut one piece square and cope the second to its profile, so the joint stays closed when the house moves. The second is caulk discipline: shim where a ceiling dips, glue outside miters, and fill before the painter arrives.

## Our Crown Molding Installation Process

1. Walk the rooms, measure footage, check texture and corners
2. Pick profile and material with samples held up in the room
3. Written quote by linear foot, prep priced separately
4. Prep: floors covered, furniture moved, texture band removed
5. Install: layout, coping, mitering, fastening into top plates
6. Fill, caulk, touch up, then walk every corner with you

A two-room crown molding installation takes a day, and a full first floor takes two to four.

## What a Crown Molding Contractor Charges per Linear Foot

Scope

Typical installed range

Painted crown, 8 ft ceiling

$9 to $14 per foot

Single piece, 9 to 10 ft

$13 to $20 per foot

Built up two or three piece

$20 to $34 per foot

Stained hardwood

$24 to $40 per foot

Three things move it: ceiling height and staging, profile complexity and corner count, and ceiling prep, which runs another $3 to $7 per foot. These are typical Jacksonville ranges, and a firm figure takes seeing the rooms. Before you sign, ask any crown molding contractor whether they cope inside corners and how they handle ceiling texture.

## What Sets Our Crown Work Apart in Older and New Homes

Popcorn Prep

### A Flat Seat on Textured Ceilings

Knockdown and popcorn texture from the 1970s and 1980s is why so much crown looks wavy. The molding sits on the high spots and leaves a gap that caulk only makes more obvious. Before any trim goes up, we deal with the ceiling itself: scraping a clean band around the perimeter, skimming it smooth, or scribing the top edge to follow the surface. That prep is priced as its own line in your quote, so nothing surprises you.

Coped Corners

### Inside Corners That Stay Closed

Mitering both halves of an inside corner assumes the walls meet at a perfect 90 degrees, and in most houses they do not. We cut one piece square and cope the next to match its profile, so the joint holds together as the house shifts. Outside miters get glue, not just nails. Where the ceiling dips, we shim, and all the filling is finished before your painter shows up.

3 to 9 in

### Sized and Specified for the Room

Trim that is too small vanishes in a tall room, and an oversized profile swallows a low hallway. We match the size and shape to your ceiling, from a quiet cove at 8 feet to a stacked three-piece build at 10 feet and up, and we hold samples up in the room before you choose. Finger-jointed pine suits conditioned living spaces, while baths and lanais get polyurethane or PVC.

- > If I could give Klein Carpentry 10 Stars I would. Ray and Nathan are First Class Carpenters and throughout the whole process their attention to detail was beyond our expectations. We had Shiplap installed in our Cafe/Dining Room and Board&Batten throughout the Foyer. Through the start of installation the communication, cleanliness and putting up a plastic wall to exhaust the dust outside was a Plus because going through renovations can be stressful but they made it perfect. We are so impressed that they are coming back to do built-ins on each side of the fireplace. ⭐️⭐️Update Second Review⭐️⭐️ Ray and Nathan has exceeded our expectations again. Just Wow!!! They designed our 10 ft Built Ins here in Marshes of Maderia by Master Craft Homes. We absolutely love the Reeded Door and Drawer Panel design with Lights looks so Sophisticated and Timeless . Now our New Home looks complete ❤️

- > We recently used Klein Carpentry to aid in the renovation of our home. Ray and his team installed new baseboards, wainscotting, window/door trim and crown molding to bring a major update to what was a builder grade interior. From the bidding to the final nail took about two months but the results were worth the wait. During the entire process, Ray was polite and passionate about his work while keeping the working area tidy at all times. I would highly recommend using Kline for any of your carpentry needs, you won't be disappointed!

- > My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Klein Carpentry. We recently moved into our new home, and as most homeowners, we wanted to put our personal touch on it. Inspired by so many ideas from Pinterest and HGTV, like so many others, I had several ideas of how I envision what I wanted for our custom built-in. I spoke with Ray, who could also see my vision and transfer it to a 3D program for us to see visually. Well, I can't say enough of what a fantastic job both Ray and Nathan did. From the start of our project to the very end, they exceeded our expectations in every way possible. Words can't describe how their professionalism, commitment, and craftsmanship are genuine. Both Ray and Nathan are genuinely a pleasure to work with. They are two kind, sincere gentlemen who care about their work and the client's vision. They are punctual and reliable and went above and beyond to ensure that my built-ins were completed on time. With this said, we could not be happier with how they turned out. I can finally display my beautiful Disney collectible, which I had been put away for far too long. I highly recommend Klein Carpentry to anyone considering having any work done in theirs.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How much does crown molding cost for one room?

A 12 by 14 living room with 8-foot ceilings runs roughly $500 to $800 installed with a painted single-piece profile. Taller ceilings and built-up profiles cost more.

Will the joints open up in Florida humidity?

Coped inside corners and glued outside miters hold up well here. In baths and coastal homes we specify PVC or polyurethane, not pine.

How long will my rooms be out of use?

Single rooms are usually finished in a day, and larger scopes run two to four days.

Can crown go over my popcorn ceiling?

Yes, but not directly against the texture. We scrape a narrow band at the perimeter, smooth the ceiling, or scribe the crown to it.

Do Riverside and Avondale homes need custom profiles?

Often. Plaster walls and tall original profiles make stock crown look out of period, so we match what is there.
