A 1940s Riverside bedroom might be 11 by 12 feet with a swinging closet door, so a queen bed eats most of it. The fix is a lower headboard, nightstands 16 to 18 inches wide instead of the 24 inch standard, and a tall, narrow chest. Stock frames come in only four mattress sizes, and stock heights are set by whatever shipped flat in a box. We build platform frames with a solid slat deck, low frames with no footboard, four-poster frames, and headboard-only builds that mount to the wall over your existing foundation. Two questions come first: how tall the mattress and foundation are, since that sets the headboard proportion, and whether you want drawers in the base. We size the width, depth and height to the gap you have, then decide what goes inside: one deep drawer, two shallow ones, a shelf, or a door. A notch around the outlet and a pass-through for charger cords cost almost nothing to build in. They do not have to match, either. White oak is the current favorite and takes a light natural or warm fumed look well. Walnut reads darker and costs more. Maple and poplar sand glass-smooth under paint. Cherry deepens over a couple of years, which not everyone expects. Matching an existing set is a normal request. Built-in bedroom furniture uses wall depth you already own and gives back floor space.
