Klein Carpentry – Custom Built-Ins FAQ

1 How do custom built-ins differ from regular furniture?

Custom built-ins are permanent, tailor-made pieces designed to fit your space perfectly — unlike store-bought furniture, which is one-size-fits-all. Built-ins maximize every inch of available space, complement your home’s architecture, and add long-term value. They’re both functional and architectural, becoming part of your home’s design.

2 Where in my home are built-ins most commonly installed?

Popular areas include living rooms, home offices, bedrooms, mudrooms, and dining rooms. Many Jacksonville homeowners love custom entertainment centers, bookcases, and mudroom lockers for their functionality. The goal is to enhance storage and style in spaces where off-the-shelf pieces simply don’t fit or look right.

3 Do built-ins add value to my home?

Absolutely. Well-designed built-ins add visual appeal and functionality that buyers notice immediately. They make spaces feel finished and purposeful — a key advantage in the competitive Duval and St. Johns County housing markets.

4 Can built-ins be removed or relocated later if I move?

They’re designed to be permanent, so while removal is possible, it often damages drywall or trim. However, the value they add to the home often outweighs the ability to relocate them. If portability is important, we can design semi-custom units that offer some flexibility.

5 How long does it typically take to design and build a custom built-in?

Most projects take between two to six weeks from design approval to installation, depending on complexity and finish. Design, material sourcing, and precision craftsmanship all take time.

6 Can you design built-ins to match my existing cabinetry, trim,

Yes. We take great care to match profiles, paint colors,  wood species, and stain match so your built-in looks like it’s always been part of your home. Our work blends seamlessly with everything from traditional/historical  homes to newer contemporary/coastal builds around Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville Beach.

7 What types of built-ins do you offer?

We specialize in entertainment centers, bookcases, window seats, mudroom lockers, office units, pantries, custom Murphy beds, and closets. Every design starts with how you live and use the space — then we tailor the function, layout, and look accordingly.

8 Do you provide 3D renderings or design mockups before starting?

Yes. We start with a phone consultation. On this call we will explore your design ideas and gather information, we ask for any inspirational photos you may have saved, rough wall measurements length x height and a photo or two your space where project is to be built. We then craete a live 3D model of your project using the info you have provided. We will email a link and schedule another call. On this call we will make any necessary changes in real time together.

9 Can you make them fit oddly shaped spaces?

That’s one of our specialties. We custom-build every piece to your home’s exact measurements — even around sloped ceilings, uneven wall's, or awkward nooks. Custom fabrication allows us to create clean lines and a professional, built-in look that stock furniture can’t achieve.

10 Can I choose the wood type, finish, and hardware?

Yes, every detail is customizable. You can choose from solid hardwoods, or paint-grade materials, and select stains, paints, or specialty finishes. We’ll also help you choose hardware that comp lements your home’s overall design if needed. We do ask that you furnish the drawer and door pulls to ensure exact style, finish, and lengths.

11 Can you incorporate pullout shelves or hidden compartments?

Definitely. We often include pullout drawers inplace of shelves. Doors, cubbies, and even hidden panels where needed in our designs. A feature we love is, pop out shelves that double as bedside tables for our Murphy bed builds. The goal is to combine beauty and functionality to your build.

12 Do built-ins work well in small spaces?

When designed correctly, built-ins actually make small rooms feel larger and more intentional. By using vertical space and integrating storage cleanly into the walls, they eliminate clutter and create an open, cohesive feel.

13 Built-ins around fireplaces, windows, or awkward nooks?

Yes. We frequently build around fireplaces, bay windows, and oddly shaped alcoves. These spots are perfect for custom cabinetry because they transform otherwise underused areas into architectural features.

14 Can built-ins accommodate TVs, electronics, or appliances?

Absolutely. We can conceal wires, add ventilation, and size cabinetry precisely for your electronics. Many clients in Jacksonville love combining storage and media design for a clean, modern living room setup.

15 How much weight can custom shelving safely hold?

It depends on the material and shelf span, but our shelving is reinforced to handle heavy books, décor, and electronics safely. We use proper joinery and bracing techniques so strength matches the aesthetic.

16 What materials do you use- solid wood, MDF, or other options?

We usally use birch, white oak, and or walnut plywood for our cabinets and bookcases. We use solind harwood poplar, white oak, and walnut for our faceframes, door & drawer stiles and rails. The more exotic the wood speicies is, the higher the cost for the project. If you are not sure of what speicies of wood you need,  we’ll be happy recommend the best combination based on your goals and budget.

17 How do different materials affect durability and cost?

Solid hardwoods are the most durable and premium, but they come at a higher cost. Plywood offer's great value and stability, especially for painted and some stained projects. We balance your aesthetic, function, and budget when recommending materials.

18 Are built-ins easy to maintain and clean?

Yes. Most surfaces just need light dusting and occasional wipe-downs. With high-quality paints or finishes, they resist scuffs and stay looking sharp for years.

19 Can built-ins be painted or refinished later if I change my décor?

Yes. Paint-grade built-ins can easily be repainted, while stained units can often be a lengthy, messy, as well as smelly process to remove the polyurethane clear coat and stain coats. The refinishing is easier than the removal process, but is also messy and smelly.

20 Do you offer eco-friendly or sustainable material options?

We can absolutely source eco-friendly materials, including low-VOC finishes and sustainably harvested woods. Many clients in St. Johns County choose this route to make their projects more environmentally responsible.

21 How much do custom built-ins usually cost?

Pricing varies depending on size, materials, and design complexity. A simple built-in bookshelf might start around a few thousand dollars, while larger entertainment walls or full closet systems can range higher. We always provide clear, detailed estimates before work begins.

22 Is pricing based on size, complexity, or materials?

All three factors play a role. Larger pieces require more material and labor, while intricate trim or premium finishes affect cost. During your consultation, we’ll explain each factor so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

23 Do you provide a detailed written estimate before starting?

Yes, transparency is key. We outline every element of your project — from materials and labor to finish options — so there are no surprises. You’ll know exactly what’s included before we begin.

24 What’s included in the cost — design, materials, labor, painting/finish

Our proposals typically include design consultation, materials, fabrication, and installation. Painting or staining can be included or handled by us or your painter — we’ll clarify that in your quote as well so everything’s clear.

25. Do you offer a warranty or guarantee on your built-in projects?

Yes. We stand behind every project. Klein Carpentry guarantees the quality of our mat erials and workmanship for 5 years. And we’re always available and happy to address any concerns that may arise after installation.
