What Is the Usual Duration of a Carpentry Project in Jacksonville?
How long does a carpentry project take in Jacksonville? Most trim and accent wall projects take 1 to 3 days on site, while custom built-ins and cabinetry usually take 4 to 10 weeks from design approval to final install. This page expands on the short answer in the FAQ of our Jacksonville carpentry company homepage, where we promise a clear timeline up front and regular progress updates along the way.
Quick answer: Installed carpentry (crown molding, baseboards, shiplap, board and batten, ceiling beams) is measured in days. Shop-built work (built-ins, closets, Murphy beds, cabinetry, furniture) is measured in weeks, because most of the time is spent designing and building in our shop, not working in your home. Time in your house is usually a small fraction of the total.
Two Clocks: Calendar Time and Time in Your Home
When people ask how long a project takes, they usually mean one of two things. The first is total calendar time, from the first phone call until the job is done. The second is how many days a crew will be working inside the house. For shop-built work, those numbers are very different.
A custom media wall might take seven weeks on the calendar, but only three or four of those days involve our carpenters in your living room. The rest happens in the design phase and in our shop while you go about your life.

The Six Phases of a Carpentry Project
1. Consultation and measuring
We visit the space, listen to what you want, and take exact measurements. For trim projects we can often price the work from this single visit. For custom work, this is where we gather photos, ceiling heights, outlet locations, and details about how you use the room.
2. 3D design and revisions
For built-ins, ceilings, and furniture, we create a 3D design and architectural rendering of your room. Most clients go through one or two rounds of changes. This phase moves as fast as decisions do. A client who knows what they want can approve in a few days. Choosing between door styles and stain colors can add a week or two, and that time is well spent.
3. Materials and acclimation
Once the design is approved, we order wood and hardware. Solid wood needs time to adjust to local conditions before it is cut and installed. Wood shrinks and swells as its moisture content changes, a behavior documented in the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook. Skipping this step is how trim ends up with open miters a few months later.
4. Shop build
Cabinet boxes, doors, drawers, and furniture are built and finished in our shop. This is the longest phase for custom work and the one you never have to live with. Because it happens off site, your home stays usable while your project is being built.
5. Installation
Our carpenters install the work, scribing each piece to your walls, floors, and ceilings. Florida houses are rarely perfectly square, so fitting takes care. During installation we protect floors and contain dust. One client noted that the crew put up a plastic wall to exhaust dust outside, which made living through the work much easier.
6. Final walkthrough
We walk the finished project with you, adjust doors and drawers, and handle any touch ups before we call the job complete.
What Speeds Up or Slows Down a Carpentry Project
| Factor | Effect on timeline | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Quick design decisions | Shortens design phase by 1 to 2 weeks | Gather inspiration photos before the first visit |
| Paint grade vs. stain grade | Stain grade can add time for species selection and finishing | Decide early which look you want |
| Specialty wood species | Can add 1 to 3 weeks for ordering | Ask about readily available species if timing matters |
| Electrical work (LED lighting, fireplace inserts, TV wiring) | Requires a licensed electrician to coordinate | Plan electrical scope during design |
| Clear, accessible rooms | Keeps installation on schedule | Move furniture and wall decor before install day |
| Change orders after shop build begins | Can add 1 to 3 weeks | Finalize details in the 3D phase |
| Holiday season demand | Lead times often stretch in fall | Book late summer projects for holiday hosting |
How Jacksonville's Climate Affects Your Timeline
Northeast Florida's humidity is the reason we do not rush material acclimation. Jacksonville averages about 89 percent relative humidity in the morning and 58 percent in the afternoon, and coastal regions carry an equilibrium moisture content above 9 percent. In practice that means material should sit in your conditioned home for a few days before it is cut. In new construction, we also wait until the HVAC is running and drywall mud has fully dried, since a house still drying out can move fresh trim. For garages, lanais, and beach homes with salt air, we choose materials and finishes made for those conditions, which can change lead times.
Can You Live in Your Home During the Project?
Yes. Almost every Jacksonville homeowner we work with stays in the house during installation. Trim and accent wall work usually affects one or two rooms at a time. Built-ins are installed after they are built, so the messy part of the work happens in our shop, not your living room. At the end of each day we clean the work area, and we tell you in advance which rooms will be off limits.
Commercial Project Timelines
Offices, retail spaces, and other businesses often need work done outside business hours or in phases so they can stay open. Reception desks and conference tables follow the shop-built timeline above. Installed millwork in a working office is often scheduled over evenings or weekends. We build the schedule around your operations during planning. Learn more on our page about residential and commercial carpentry projects.
Why Choose Klein Carpentry for an On-Time Carpentry Project in Jacksonville
A timeline you see before you commit
Every estimate includes a timeline, so you know when the design will be ready, when the shop build starts, and how many days we will be in your home. Our homepage promise is simple: a transparent timeline up front and regular progress updates. When a material delay or a design change affects the schedule, you hear about it from us right away, with a new date instead of silence.
Design time that prevents rework
Our 3D design process moves decisions to the cheapest point in the project. Changing a door style on screen takes minutes. Changing it after a cabinet is built can add weeks. Clients see their room before construction begins, which is why our installations rarely stall over surprises. It is also why so many of our 51 Google reviews mention that the finished work matched what was promised.
One team, fewer handoffs
Delays usually happen between trades: the cabinet supplier is late, the installer is booked, the measurements were wrong. We design, build, and install with one team, and we only install cabinetry we build. That removes the most common handoffs that slow projects down, and it keeps one company accountable for the date we give you.

I reached out to get an estimate on building a wet bar to put in the mudroom of our home. Ray sent me a work up and it looked great, so we moved forward. Their craftsmanship is flawless, and they truly went above and beyond to ensure we were happy with the work. Would highly recommend if you’re looking at home projects

Absolutely recommend! 5 Star experience all around. Pricing was extremely reasonable and fair and the results of the work was spectacular. I had a window frame and siding that needed to be replaced due to water damage. The end result was nothing short of excellent. I will be definitely be using them again going forward and will be letting others know to use them as well.
