Custom Woodworking in Jacksonville, FL
This is Klein Carpentry's woodworking page. Our woodworking services in Jacksonville, FL cover the pieces we build on machines in our shop and deliver finished: dining tables, beds, desks, reception counters, sideboards and freestanding cabinets. Each of those builds has its own page, and the list below sends you to the right one.
People usually get here after the store let them down. The table that fits the room comes in one length, and the sideboard you liked is veneer over particleboard. A shop starts from your dimensions instead. Tell us the space, the wood and what the piece has to survive, and we cut to those numbers.

Every Custom Woodworking Project We Build
These categories cover almost everything that comes through the door. Custom woodworking gets specific fast, so each one has its own page with sizing, materials and prices.

Woodworking or Carpentry: Which Side Is Your Project On?
Woodworking is freestanding. If two people could carry it out of the house without a pry bar, it belongs here: tables, desks, dressers, cabinets on legs and outdoor seating. It is built complete in the shop and delivered as an object.
Carpentry is attached. Built-ins, trim, wainscoting, ceilings and installed cabinet runs are fitted to one room and stay with the house, scribed to crooked walls and fastened into framing.
Plenty of rooms use both. A dining room might get a wood accent wall from the carpentry side and a table from this side, cut from the same white oak.

Inside the Woodworking Shop
Our woodworking shop is in Jacksonville, and that changes the job.
- Species. White oak, red oak, maple, poplar, ash, walnut, cherry, cypress and mahogany, plus hardwood and marine plywood. Poplar and maple go under paint, white oak and walnut take stain or oil, and cypress and mahogany go outdoors.
- Joinery. Mortise and tenon for table frames, dovetails for drawer boxes, loose tenons for panels and breadboard ends on wide tops. Tops fasten with clips or elongated slots so the slab can move with the season.
- Finishing. We spray in a controlled space, not in your living room: catalyzed varnish for surfaces that take abuse, hardwax oil for tables people want to feel, and marine spar varnish outdoors.
- Being local. Lead times are short because nothing sits in a factory queue, and revisions are possible because the piece is twenty minutes away.
Fine Woodworking in a Humid Climate
Fine woodworking in Northeast Florida is mostly a fight with moisture, and a shop that ignores it builds furniture that cracks by its second summer.
Wood moves across the grain. Interior humidity swings from soupy in August to dry in January with the heat running, and a 40 inch wide top can change a quarter inch across that swing. Glue it rigid and something splits.
So we design for the movement. Wide tops float on slotted fasteners, panels sit loose in grooved frames, breadboard ends are pinned through oversized holes, and drawer boxes get clearance for a humid week.
Material choice does the rest. Hardwood acclimates in the shop before milling, and end grain gets sealed. Salt air adds a rule: at the Beaches and in Ponte Vedra, hardware is stainless or coated, outdoor frames are cypress, mahogany or teak, and raw MDF stays out of the house.
Working With a Woodworker: How a Commission Runs
Commissioning a piece from a woodworker follows a sequence worth knowing before you call.
Conversation
Send photos with rough dimensions and tell us what the piece has to do. Seat ten. Hide a printer. Survive a five year old.
Measure and design
We measure the room, the doorways and the stair turn. You get a quote and, on complex pieces, a drawing with species, edge profile, base style and finish.
Deposit
Custom work starts with a deposit that covers material, commonly about half, with the balance due at delivery. Once lumber is cut, changes cost real money.
Build
Shop time usually runs three to six weeks. A console table is quick. A ten seat conference table with a power grommet run is not.
Finish and delivery
Spraying and curing take days. Then we carry the piece in, level it and take the packing with us.
Why Buy From a Custom Wood Shop Instead of a Showroom
A custom wood shop wins on three things, and it is only honest to say it loses on a fourth.
You get the exact size, since a 94 inch table for a 94 inch wall is just Tuesday. You get solid hardwood and plywood cases rather than laminate over particleboard, so the piece can be refinished in fifteen years. And the person who measured your room answers the phone if a drawer sticks.
What you give up is speed. If the deadline is a week out, buy the showroom piece.
Residential and Commercial Work Under One Shop
Roughly half of what we build goes into houses and half into businesses, and the machines do not know the difference.
Residential work is dining tables, bedroom sets, home office desks, entry consoles and lanai furniture, with a flexible timeline and a finish chosen against a floor sample.
Commercial work is reception desks, conference tables, medical casework and restaurant tops. Those come with a lease deadline and requirements a house never has: ADA-height transaction counters, grommets and power pathways, and finishes that take a disinfectant wipe all day. Commercial clients get a firm install date, because a practice opening on the first cannot flex.

What Custom Woodworking Costs in Jacksonville
Pricing comes down to how much hardwood is in the piece, how many doors and drawers it has, and how complicated the finish is.
| Build | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Console or entry table | $900 to $3,000 |
| Home office desk | $1,800 to $6,000 |
| Dining table, solid hardwood | $2,500 to $9,000 |
| Bedroom set, bed and two nightstands | $4,000 to $14,000 |
| Freestanding cabinet or sideboard | $2,500 to $8,500 |
| Reception desk | $4,500 to $15,000 |
| Conference table, 8 to 14 seats | $5,000 to $20,000 |
| Outdoor table and seating | $1,500 to $7,000 |
What moves the number: species (walnut at the top, poplar at the bottom), drawer count, tops over 40 inches wide, tapered legs, integrated power and any rush. These are typical Northeast Florida ranges, and an exact number requires seeing the space.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a custom piece take?
Plan on three to six weeks of shop time once the design is approved and material is ordered. Conference tables and full bedroom sets run longer, and finishing takes a surprising share of that clock in summer.
Can you build furniture that fits an older Riverside or Avondale house?
Yes, and those houses are half the reason people call. Rooms there are narrower, doorways tighter, floors sloped. We measure the delivery path as carefully as the piece and level on site with adjustable feet.
Do you take commercial jobs, or only homeowners?
Both. Reception desks, conference tables, medical casework and restaurant tops are a steady part of the schedule, and we work from a designer's or contractor's drawings when they exist.
Will a solid wood table crack in Florida humidity?
Not if it is built for the climate. The failure comes from gluing a wide top rigidly to a base that cannot let it move. We use slotted fasteners, floating panels and pinned breadboard ends, and we finish both faces of a top equally.
Do you build outdoor furniture that survives the sun and salt here?
We do, in cypress, mahogany and teak with stainless hardware and a marine-grade finish. Full sun is harder on a finish than rain is, so plan on a refresh every couple of years for anything uncovered.
