You have been working from the dining table, or from a particleboard desk that wobbles every time you type. A custom home office desk is one of the cabinet and desk projects our shop builds for people who have finally admitted the spare bedroom is an office. That room is usually an odd size, with a window in the wrong place and one outlet on the wall you want the desk against.
A desk built for the room can be as deep as you need and wired so nothing hangs down the back.
A built-in office desk is fixed to the walls, so it can run the full width of a room, wrap a corner, or tuck under a window with no wasted inch. Nothing collects dust behind it, and the depth can change along the run.
A freestanding desk moves. If you rent, or the room might go back to being a bedroom, that matters more than the inches a built-in gains.

A hybrid works too: a freestanding desk with matching shelving fixed to the wall beside it.
Most bad desks are the wrong size, not the wrong style.
A top height of 29 to 30 inches suits most people, and 28 to 30 inches of depth lets a 27 inch monitor sit back far enough. One person needs about 60 inches of width, or 72 with two monitors. Two workstations on one wall want 60 inches each with a drawer tower between them.

Leave 42 to 48 inches behind the chair. In a small Riverside bedroom, that decides whether an L shape fits.
This is where a shop-built desk beats anything you buy.
Tell us where your router and outlet are before we build. Moving the chase exit later means a visible cord or a hole in a finished panel.
A custom wood desk lives or dies on the top, and local humidity is part of that decision. Indoor humidity swings hard between a closed-up August and a dry January, and wide solid panels move with it.
A solid hardwood top in white oak, walnut, maple or cherry can be refinished years later and has a weight a panel never matches, but it must be free to move.
A veneer core panel with a hardwood edge stays flat on a long span, which is why we use it on most desks over six feet.

We spray a catalyzed or waterborne finish rather than an oil, since coffee and sweating glasses both land on a desk.
Home office built-ins turn a desk into a room that works, because they give the printer and the files somewhere to live besides the floor.
What we build most: file drawers on full extension slides, a closed printer cabinet, shelving 10 to 12 inches deep, and a credenza on a second wall.
Keep shelf spans short. A painted three-quarter inch shelf carrying binders bows past about 32 inches, so we shorten the span, band the edge, or thicken the shelf. If the room is mostly shelving, our built-in bookcases page goes deeper, and cabinetry that wraps the room falls under custom built-ins.
Plan lighting now, since linear LED strips under the shelves get rid of the shadow a ceiling fixture casts.
Two things decide whether the room feels right.
The first is matching. We take a profile off your baseboard and casing so the desk returns into the room trim instead of butting against it. If the office sits beside a stained built-in, bring us a door and we will spray sample panels for you to view under those lights. A painted match is close to exact.
The second is access. Upstairs offices in Nocatee and Julington Creek mean a turn at the stair landing, and older houses in Avondale and San Marco have narrow doorways. We measure that path first, then build a long desk in sections that are joined on site.
Hiring a custom desk builder should be straightforward. We measure the room, look at the wall and floor, find your outlets and jacks, and ask what happens at that desk: two monitors or three, one person or two.
You get a drawing and a written quote, plus a 3D rendering when the built-ins wrap two walls.
The build takes two to five weeks in our shop, not in your house. Installation takes one to two days: we set and level the cases, scribe the ends, set the top, then hang the doors and drawers.

What moves the price: solid versus veneer core tops, stain versus paint grade, drawer count, lighting, and scribe work in a house with out-of-square walls. These are typical Jacksonville ranges, and an exact price takes a visit.
One Cord Out
Monitors, chargers and a router can turn the back of a desk into a tangle. Our desks get grommets placed exactly where cords drop, a chase behind a removable back panel, a vented shelf that lifts the computer and battery backup off the floor, and a power strip tucked inside so a single cord runs to the outlet. Hardwood blocking under each clamp keeps monitor arms from bouncing on a thin top.

Most frustrating desks are simply the wrong size. Plans start around 29 to 30 inches of height, enough depth for a large monitor to sit well back, and about five feet of width per person, with more added for dual screens. Space behind the chair gets measured as well, since 42 to 48 inches of clearance often decides whether an L-shaped layout can work in a smaller spare bedroom.
Built in Parts
A twelve foot desk is useless if it cannot clear the stair landing. On the first visit we trace the route from the front door to the office, including narrow doorways in older homes and upstairs turns in newer ones. Longer desks and tall cabinets are then made in pieces that pass through a standard door and get joined on site, with the ends scribed to walls that are rarely square.

Very happy with the professional work done by Klein Carpentry. We had wood accents done for the entrance way, great room and master bedroom. Fantastic craftsmanship and took the time to make it look perfect. Also had ceiling beams placed in the great room and master bedroom. They really complete both rooms. Yes, and it is a common request. We set the top below the sill and keep upper shelving off to the sides so you keep the light. It also changes where the monitor goes, since a screen backlit by a west-facing window is unusable in the afternoon.
We measure that path on the first visit. Long desks and tall cases get built in sections that fit through a standard door and around a stair landing, then are joined on site.
It can, and that is normal. Indoor humidity here swings enough that a wide solid top grows and shrinks slightly, so we attach it with slots or figure-eight fasteners instead of screwing it down tight. Long tops usually get a veneer core panel.
