Can You Match My Existing Trim and Cabinets?

Usually, yes. Matching existing trim is a normal part of how we build custom built-in shelving and cabinets. We take a profile off your casing, baseboard, and crown so the new unit returns into the room trim cleanly. A painted finish is straightforward. An aged stain is harder, and we will tell you up front how close we can get.

Quick answer: Trim profiles can almost always be matched, either with a stock molding, a built-up combination of moldings, or a custom profile. Painted cabinets and trim match easily. Stained wood that has aged for years is the hardest thing to match exactly, because the original has changed color over time.

Matching Trim Profiles

Every house has a trim "language": the shape and size of its casing around doors and windows, its baseboard, and its crown molding. A built-in that ignores that language looks added on. One that speaks it looks original.

We start by taking the profile directly off your existing trim and measuring its height and thickness. Then we choose the best way to reproduce it.

Matching method When it works How close it gets
Stock molding match Common profiles in newer homes and many remodels Exact or nearly exact
Built-up profile Larger or more complex trim that no single stock piece matches Very close; often indistinguishable once painted
Custom-milled profile Unusual historic profiles with no close stock match Exact, at higher cost and lead time
Complementary profile When an exact match is not worth the cost on a separate wall Intentionally coordinated, not identical

Built-up profiles combine two or three stock moldings to recreate a larger shape. This is how many historic crown and casing profiles in older Jacksonville homes are reproduced at a reasonable cost. We also install crown molding, baseboard, and door and window casing on their own when the rest of the room needs updating too.

Matching Existing Cabinets

When a built-in sits near existing cabinetry, such as a kitchen next to a family room, it should look like part of the same set. We match on three things:

  1. Door style. Slab, Shaker, beaded inset, or reeded and fluted. We match the frame width, panel style, and edge detail.
  2. Construction. Overlay doors and inset doors look very different, even in the same style. We match whichever your existing cabinets use.
  3. Finish. Paint color and sheen, or stain color and sheen.
Door style Relative cost Ease of matching
Slab, painted Lowest Easy
Shaker Low to middle Easy; frame width is the key detail
Beaded inset Higher Moderate; bead size and reveals must match
Reeded or fluted Highest Moderate; reed spacing must match

Paint vs Stain: How Close We Can Get

Finish How well it matches Why
Painted, known color Excellent Same paint color and sheen can be reproduced
Painted, unknown color Very good Color can be matched from a sample chip
Stain on new or recent wood Good Species, stain, and sheen can be matched
Aged stain on older wood Hardest Wood darkens or ambers with light and age
Stain on a different species Difficult Grain and color absorption differ by species

Wood changes color as it ages. Cherry darkens noticeably, and many species amber under sunlight, which is why a ten year old stained cabinet will not match a fresh sample even when the same stain is used. When we look at your existing work, we will tell you honestly how close we can get and whether a complementary finish would look better than a near miss.

Why Matching Matters in Jacksonville Homes

In historic neighborhoods like Riverside, Avondale, and San Marco, original trim is part of the home's character. New built-ins should follow its profiles and proportions. In new builds in Nocatee and Bartram Park, the opposite is often true: owners want built-ins with more detail than the builder-grade trim, and sometimes upgrade the room's trim at the same time.

Climate matters for finishes too. Jacksonville averages about 89 percent relative humidity in the morning, and wood moves with moisture. We use sprayed conversion varnish or waterborne coatings rather than brushed wall paint, so new built-ins hold their finish next to your existing trim.

Why Choose Klein Carpentry to Match Your Home

We start from your trim, not a catalog

Every built-in starts with your existing casing, baseboard, and crown. We take the profile, measure it, and decide whether a stock, built-up, or custom profile is the right way to reproduce it. The goal is a unit that returns into the room trim so cleanly it looks original to the house.

Honest answers on finish matching

Paint matches easily. Aged stain is harder, and we say so before you commit instead of after install. When an exact stain match is not realistic, we will show you options, including a complementary finish that looks intentional rather than almost right.
