Custom Mudroom Benches and Lockers in Jacksonville, FL

A built-in mudroom bench is a seat, a back, and storage above and below, scribed to your walls. Dimensions are most of the job: too high and kids' feet dangle, too shallow and nobody sits down.

Those numbers shift with who uses the door: two adults want wider bays, four kids want narrow ones.

Custom mudroom lockers are the vertical bays rising off the bench, and they are what survives a school year with kids. Each bay gets side dividers, a hook or two, a shelf overhead, and open access so a coat can be tossed in. We run them to the ceiling with storage up top. Doors are optional and most families skip them, since a door is one more step between a kid and putting something away.

Mudroom cubbies under the bench are where shoes go, and how you build them decides whether the room stays neat. Open cubbies about 13 by 12 inches hold adult shoes or a basket. Drawers hide everything, which suits an entry you can see from the kitchen. We often mix them: baskets on the ends, shoe cubbies in the middle, and a deep drawer for the rest.

This is the part most builders skip. A mudroom storage bench here takes wet shoes after a storm, sand from the Beaches, and months of humid air. Paint-grade MDF is fine for a bookcase, but it mushrooms the first time water sits on it.

So we change the recipe at the floor. Anything below about 14 inches gets PVC, marine plywood, or poplar sealed on all six faces, including the cut ends. We leave cubby floors open at the back for airflow, finish with a wipeable enamel, and on a garage entry hold the cabinet off the slab, since concrete wicks moisture year-round.

Riverside, Avondale and Springfield houses rarely have a mudroom, which is the fun part. An entryway bench with storage there comes out of found space: the wall beside the back door, a stair landing, a dead kitchen corner, an enclosed porch. Those walls are never square. Expect plaster over lath, floors that drop half an inch across six feet, and baseboards you cannot buy today. We scribe every vertical, shim the base level, and build the face frame straight even when the wall is not.

Newer homes in Nocatee, Bartram Park and St. Johns do have a drop zone, and it is usually disappointing: a shallow niche, one melamine shelf, five hooks on a board. We pull the builder shelf and fill the niche floor to ceiling with a real bench, bays and closed storage. Those houses are square, so the install often takes a single day. If the niche is too small, we borrow a foot from the garage.

In many Jacksonville floor plans, the garage entry, laundry and pantry all touch. Building them as one project costs less per foot, because the door style, paint and hardware match and we paint once. A combined build puts the bench and lockers on the entry wall, a folding counter over the washer and dryer, and tall pantry shelving at the far end.
