Board and Batten Walls in Jacksonville, FL

A board and batten wall does the most work in rooms you pass through rather than sit in. Entries take the abuse of shoes, bags and dogs while looking deliberate. Stairwells come second, with battens following the rake. Dining rooms take it at chair rail height, bedrooms behind the bed, and mudrooms benefit most, since hooks land in wood instead of a drywall anchor.

Most bad board and batten is bad because nobody did the arithmetic. Spacing should divide the wall evenly, land near a stud where possible, and stay proportional to the ceiling. Here is where we start before adjusting to the wall.

Two rules apply. End bays should never be narrower than half a bay, so we tune spacing until the wall divides evenly. And the top rail should be wider than the battens so it reads as a cap. Battens are 1x3 or 1x4; thinner stock loses the shadow line.

Board and batten wainscoting stops at 32 to 48 inches with a capped top rail, the safest choice in a busy room. It leaves the upper wall for art, works with your existing baseboard, and costs the least.

Two-thirds height, roughly 60 to 72 inches, is what most people picture, and it is our usual pick for entries and stairwells. Full-wall needs a flat substrate and a clean ceiling line: striking in a 10-foot dining room, busy in an 8-foot bedroom. Recessed panels instead of battens are closer to traditional wainscoting.
