The first question is always solid timber or hollow, and here the answer leans hollow for reasons that have more to do with weather than budget.
A solid timber beam is one piece of wood, and wood moves. Northeast Florida swings from dry winter air to months of soaking humidity, and a big solid member answers by checking, cupping and twisting. Those splits can be the look you want, or they can open a quarter inch over one summer and pull a joint apart.
Faux wood beams avoid that. Polyurethane beams are molded from real timber and unaffected by moisture, though they convince at eight feet up and less so up close. Hollow beams built from real lumber are the middle road we usually recommend.

A box beam ceiling uses beams built from three faces of wood wrapped around a hidden cleat, usually a two-by-four fastened into framing. You get the look of timber at a fraction of the weight.
We miter the long corners so no end grain shows, then glue and pin them before anything goes up. From the floor the joints read as one solid piece, and the hollow center hides wiring or a channel for integrated LED millwork lighting.
Layout is what makes decorative ceiling beams look designed instead of random. We run them across the short dimension so the eye reads width, spaced 3 to 5 feet on center, usually 5 to 10 inches wide and 4 to 8 inches deep.
Ceiling height changes everything. In a Nocatee or Bartram Park great room with a vaulted ceiling, beams can climb the slope to the ridge and carry real depth. In an older block home with 8-foot ceilings a deep beam eats the room, so we go shallower, run three instead of six, or suggest tongue and groove planking.
Exposed ceiling beams in a true timber frame carry load. Almost everything we install does not, and the difference is attachment, not looks. A decorative beam still has to land on something solid, so we find joists and confirm with a test screw. Where beams run parallel to the joists, we add blocking in the attic or screw a continuous cleat into framing. Drywall anchors are not an option.
The common mistake is a finish that fights the floor. Jacksonville homes are full of warm oak, gray-washed plank and walnut-toned LVP, and a beam landing between two of those tones looks like an accident. We sample on the species we are using, hold the samples at ceiling height in your light, and land either a step darker than the floor or a white that matches the trim. Contrast beats a near miss.
Plenty of homes built here through the 1980s still have textured ceilings, and a beam project is the moment to deal with them. Scraping and skimming first means the field between beams is smooth and the beams sit tight to a true surface. If you would rather not scrape, planking between them covers the texture.

A single solid timber reacts to our swing from dry winters to muggy summers by splitting, cupping and twisting, sometimes enough to pull a joint open.
