Big rooms with flat ceilings feel unfinished, and furniture never fixes it. A coffered ceiling in Jacksonville, FL is the ceiling carpentry answer: a beam grid that breaks a wide plane into panels and gives the room a top edge.

Custom coffered ceilings get laid out from the room, not a catalog. We find true center, check the walls for square, and divide the space so every coffer comes out identical. Uneven coffers are the common mistake, and once you see them you cannot unsee them.
Our numbers: coffers 3 to 5 feet square, grids of 2x2, 2x3, 3x3 or 3x4, beam faces 5 to 10 inches wide, and a drop of 4 to 8 inches. In an out-of-square room, the grid follows the long dimension and the perimeter band takes up the difference.
An 8-foot ceiling takes a shallow 3 to 4 inch drop and a narrow face, best over one zone like a dining table. At 9 feet you have room for a proper beam. A box beam coffered ceiling is what most Jacksonville homes get. Depending on the project, the boxes are built in the shop or built on site in your home, then hung on a nailer frame screwed to the joists, so you get real depth without touching structure. True coffers mean opening the ceiling, which only pencils out in a larger remodel. Faux coffers photograph fine, but you can tell in person.
Primed poplar is our default for painted beams: it is straight, and it sprays clean. MDF is cheaper and smooth, but it is heavy overhead, weak at fastened edges, and it swells if an AC leak finds it. Cellular PVC is the pick for a lanai or pool bath. Stained work gets hardwood, with joints cut for seasonal movement.

Homes from the 1960s through the 1980s often still have popcorn ceilings, and these two jobs belong together. If I could give Klein Carpentry 10 Stars I would. Ray and Nathan are First Class Carpenters and throughout the whole process their attention to detail was beyond our expectations. No, if the material is right. We build painted beams in primed poplar and use PVC in damp spaces like a lanai. Hardwood beams get joints that allow for seasonal movement.
