The boards lock edge to edge, so no fasteners show. A damp climate is hard on wood overhead, so species and prep matter.
A tongue-and-groove ceiling is the biggest change you can make without moving a wall, and running the boards the long direction pulls the eye down the room.
We run boards perpendicular to the joists for solid fastening every 16 or 24 inches, and fur across the framing when the direction you want runs parallel to it. A 3.25-inch face reads traditional; a 5.25-inch face reads calmer. We often add ceiling beams.
A tongue-and-groove wall goes up the same way but takes more abuse. Tongue-and-groove paneling also solves problems. A wall that has been patched twice and still reads wavy is faster to panel than to skim coat: we fur it flat, then board over it.

Mildew is a finish failure, not a wood failure. Wash a porch ceiling yearly and recoat stained cypress every five to eight years.

At the Beaches and in Ponte Vedra, salt corrodes fasteners and holds moisture against the finish, so we use stainless fasteners and lean toward cypress or PVC.
Tongue-and-groove installation is simple on new drywall: snap a line, set the first board dead straight, and blind-nail through the tongue.
Older homes in Riverside and Springfield have plaster over lath, and nailing into lath will not hold a ceiling. We locate the real joists and fur across them first, because century-old plaster is rarely level. Block walls get a furring grid anchored into the masonry, which adds an air gap.
Boards also sit on site for days before we cut, so they reach the moisture content they will live at. Skipping that step is why gaps open a month later.
We start with a visit to measure, check the framing direction, and talk through species, then give you a fixed price naming the profile and width. Depending on the project, some pieces are built and prefinished in our shop and others are built on site in your home; prefinishing boards before they go up beats brushing overhead. Southern yellow pine is fine inside air conditioning, but its rot resistance is only fair, so we steer lanais and porch ceilings toward cypress or western red cedar. Baths and exposed porches often do best in PVC, which never needs refinishing.
