Display Cabinets and Hutches in Jacksonville, FL

On a 10 foot dining wall a built in display case reads as architecture and gains depth in corners a freestanding piece cannot use. In a rental, a hutch is the sensible call, and we build those as freestanding furniture grade pieces. Older homes push this further: Riverside and Avondale dining rooms have picture rail, plaster and chair rail you do not want to lose, and a built-in carries those lines across where a hutch cannot.

This is the section that saves the china. Shelves fail here more than anywhere else, because people load them heavily and span them wide. A doubled 1 inch hardwood shelf carries 48 inches where nothing else will.

Glass buys light, since it passes down so one fixture lights three levels and the shelves nearly disappear, which is why a curio cabinet uses glass almost every time. Wood buys load, which display hutch cabinetry holding a full set of dinner plates needs. Tempered is the only glass that belongs in a house with kids.

Adjustable shelves on a 32 millimeter drilled line let you change the display. Fixed shelves get glued and dadoed in, which stiffens the case and shows no pin holes, so a tall cabinet gets one fixed shelf mid case with adjustable shelves above and below.

An unlit display cabinet is a dark box. Lighting is the feature, not an add-on.

We run LED tape in a milled aluminum channel with a frosted diffuser, because without one you see individual diodes reflected in every pane.

Color temperature is the choice people regret. Warm white near 2700K flatters wood, brass, silver and cream china, 3000K to 3500K suits white ceramics, and above 4000K turns warm wood green.

The driver goes in the base or behind a removable panel, never in the display bay, since drivers fail before LED tape does. If millwork lighting runs elsewhere, plan it with the integrated LED lighting work.

Our sun is strong and our windows are big, so a display case on a south or west wall will fade what is inside. Textiles go first, then paper, then some glazes, slowly enough that nobody notices until a piece moves and the shadow line shows.

Three things help, in order of cost:

• A wall with no direct afternoon sun, which costs nothing
• UV filtering glass, or UV film inside the pane
• LED rather than halogen, which puts out almost no UV

Dust is the other Florida problem, especially near the Beaches where fine sand finds everything. We seal cases with a back panel rabbeted into the sides rather than nailed on, a bead behind the face frame, and a rabbeted door edge. Air gets in at the bottom, so a tight toe kick matters.

The door is what you see when the cabinet is closed. A china cabinet uses divided light doors: true divided lites with real muntins for the shadow lines, or simulated lites if you would rather clean one pane. For a curio cabinet the goal is as little frame as possible, so a narrow stile door in clear glass is right, and glass sides make it a true curio.

• Clear annealed behind muntins, cheapest and perfectly fine
• Clear tempered for large panes and anywhere kids reach
• Seeded glass, good in an older Riverside room
• Reeded glass to suggest the contents rather than show them
• A mirror back to double apparent depth

Soft close hinges keep a swinging pane from slamming, and a brass knob suits a hutch better than a bar pull.
