Every glass type is a different setting on a dial between full visibility and none. Here is what each one really does with a shelf of ordinary kitchen contents behind it.

Reeded is the sleeper pick. It hides more than seeded, more than most people expect, and it reads current without reading trendy. Clear glass is a commitment: everything behind it is now decor, permanently.

Thickness matters too. Small lights in a divided door are usually 1/8 inch glass. A single large light in a tall door wants 3/16 or 1/4 inch so it does not flex when the door swings, and reeded stock commonly runs thicker than clear, which changes how the door is rabbeted.

Seeded glass carries tiny trapped bubbles through the sheet. Seeded glass cabinets suit older Jacksonville homes, particularly in Avondale, Riverside and San Marco, where the rest of the house already has some age to it.

Two practical notes. Seed density varies a lot by product, so ask to see the actual sheet, not a photo; light seed hides almost nothing while heavy seed hides labels well. And seeded glass is more interesting with light behind it than in front of it, which makes it a good candidate for a lit cabinet.

Frosted glass cabinets are the answer when you want the plane of glass without the display obligation. Acid etched frosted glass gives an even, matte surface that reads as a soft light panel and shows only vague shapes. It is the right call for a pantry door, a laundry cabinet or an appliance garage.

The drawback is fingerprints. Etched-on-one-side glass should be installed with the etched face inward, so the exposed side is smooth glass that wipes clean. Ask for that, because it is easy to install backward.

Mullion cabinet doors divide the opening with thin wood bars into a grid of separate panes. A single light door is one sheet of glass in the frame opening.

True divided light means each pane is separately glazed against real wood bars, and that is what we build. The alternative is a grille laid over one sheet, which costs less and looks like what it is when you stand close. If your kitchen has divided light windows, matching the bar width and grid spacing to the windows is a detail worth doing.

The most common mistake with glass front upper cabinets is too many. A whole wall of glass turns a kitchen into a display case, and now every shelf is a decorating chore.

Our rule of thumb: two to four glass doors in a typical kitchen, grouped deliberately rather than scattered. Good candidates are the pair flanking a range hood, the cabinets over a bar or coffee station, and the uppers on a peninsula or island end where the glass is seen from the living room. Bad candidates are the cabinet next to the fridge where the tall pantry items live, and anything over the sink where dishware goes in wet.

Depth is a factor too. A standard 12 inch deep upper shows contents front to back; if you want a display that reads clean, a shallower shelf spacing with fewer items per shelf does more work than any glass choice. Dedicated display cabinets and hutches handle this better than a converted kitchen upper.

Once a cabinet has glass, the inside is part of the room. That changes three things we build differently.

We finish the interior to a display standard: painted interiors get the same sprayed finish as the exterior, and stain grade boxes get a veneer that matches the doors. Shelves get solid wood or a banded plywood edge instead of a raw ply edge. And many clients want the back of the glass cabinet in a contrasting color or a paneled back, which is an easy upgrade when the box is being built and a real project afterward.

Adjustable shelf holes show through glass. We either drill only the holes we need or use a shelf standard concealed in the corner, because a clear door plus two full rows of drilled holes is the giveaway detail that the cabinet was not meant to be seen into.

Interior lighting is what makes a glass cabinet look finished at night. Low profile LED strips mounted along the inside front edge of the cabinet sides give even light without hot spots, and puck lights give a pooled, more traditional effect.

The question nobody asks until install day is where the transformer goes. It needs to be accessible, it needs ventilation, and it cannot buzz behind your head while you cook. We usually place it inside an adjacent solid door cabinet on a removable panel, or in the toe kick with a service access, and we run low voltage wire through the cabinet backs during the build. Glass shelves let light fall through a tall cabinet instead of stopping at the first shelf. In a lit display cabinet, glass shelves plus a lit top is the combination that actually looks like the photo.

We start by walking the kitchen and deciding which doors get glass, which is a design conversation more than a technical one. Then we pick glass from real samples, held up against your contents where possible.

Doors are built and finished in the shop, and glass goes in last so the finish never gets on it. We glaze with clear silicone and removable wood stops rather than permanent glazing, so a broken pane can be replaced without rebuilding the door. Install runs alongside the rest of the cabinet work, and lighting gets tested before we leave.

What moves the number: glass type and thickness, whether the door is divided, and whether the interior gets a display grade finish or a contrasting back.
