A five-piece door is two stiles, two rails and a floating center panel. Matching an existing stain is the hard path. Thirty years of light have ambered the old finish, and new wood sprayed to a factory color will not match under a window, so we build sample doors for you to judge in your kitchen. Leaving frames alone works only when the doors are close in tone. Dark doors against light frames fails, dark doors with a contrasting island works.

Custom cabinet doors are built to your openings from material chosen for what comes after. Paint grade means poplar or soft maple frames with an MDF panel. Stain grade means the species shows: white oak, maple, cherry, or hickory in a farmhouse kitchen.

Species matters in this climate. White oak and maple are stable here, and red oak is fine painted if the grain gets filled. We avoid solid wood center panels on doors facing a dishwasher vent or an exterior garage wall, the two places doors cup first.
