Laundry Room Cabinets in Jacksonville, FL

Almost every laundry room we walk into has the same two problems: one wire shelf mounted too high to reach, and nowhere to set a folded towel. Laundry room cabinets in Jacksonville, FL fix both, and they are among the made to measure cabinetry we build most often, because here an inch decides whether a design works. The machines drive everything: width, depth, lid or door swing, and whether they sit on pedestals.

Laundry Room Storage: Room Versus Closet

Laundry room storage is two different jobs. A true laundry room here is 6 by 8 feet or larger. A laundry closet is a 32 to 36 inch deep bifold opening in a hallway, which is what most 1960s to 1980s Southside, Arlington and Mandarin houses have.

Laundry closet Laundry room
Typical opening 60 to 72 in wide, 30 to 36 in deep 6 ft or more of wall
Uppers that fit One or two at 12 to 15 in deep Full run plus tall storage
Counter possible Only with stacked or front load machines Yes, over side by side
Biggest constraint Depth and the door leaf swing Placing the sink and the vent

In a closet the doors are the problem. Bifolds stack into the opening and eat four to five inches per side, so cabinetry run wall to wall blocks them. We hold the cabinets inside the stack line or swap to a slider.

Sizing Laundry Cabinets Around the Machines

Most laundry cabinets that fail do so because someone used a nominal dimension instead of the actual machine.

Machine type Width Depth, door open Clearance needed above
Front load washer or dryer 27 in 50 to 55 in None, counter sits on top
Top load washer 27 to 28 in 27 to 31 in 20 to 22 in for a full lid swing

Add an inch of side clearance per machine for service, so a 27 inch pair needs about 56 inches of opening, not 54. Add four to six inches behind for the vent elbow, water box and hoses, which means 33 to 34 inches of real depth.

With a top loader the lid is the whole game. Twenty two inches of clearance puts an upper cabinet no lower than about 58 inches off the floor. We hang the upper over the dryer at normal height and step up over the washer, or keep it shallow at 12 inches so the lid swings past.

Folding Counter Over Front Loaders

A folding counter is the most requested upgrade here, and it only works cleanly over front loaders. A solid surface, butcher block or quartz top across both machines gives you 4 to 5 feet of folding space where none existed, at 37 to 38 inches. A 13 to 15 inch storage pedestal raises the machine top to about 50 inches, which is too high to fold on. Three choices:

  • Skip the pedestals and build drawers elsewhere in the run
  • Keep them and put the folding space on a separate 36 inch counter beside the machines
  • Build a site made platform at 6 to 8 inches, which lifts the door without killing counter height

We leave the counter removable rather than fastened hard on both ends. When a washer needs pulling in five years, you will be glad the top lifts off.

Moisture, Heat and Material Choice in Laundry Room Cabinetry

A dryer dumps heat and a washer dumps humidity, and in a small Jacksonville laundry room with the door shut those combine into conditions nothing else in the house sees. A laundry on a garage wall also gets condensation on the cool side of the run.

Component What we use Why
Carcass Prefinished maple or birch plywood Holds shape through humidity swings
Toe kick PVC or sealed marine ply Survives a leak or a mop
Doors and frames Painted poplar or maple Stable and wipeable
Counter Quartz, solid surface or sealed butcher block Tolerates heat and damp

Two things we do unasked. We leave the back of the cabinet over the dryer vented, since trapped heat bakes the finish, and we never build a fixed cabinet across the dryer vent path.

Utility Sink Cabinets, Rods and Hampers

A utility sink cabinet turns a plastic basin on legs into part of the run. Most drop-in laundry sinks want a 24 to 30 inch cabinet, and we build the interior around the trap: a U shaped shelf, a false drawer front up top, and a sealed bottom with a lip so a drip stays out.

A hanging rod is cheap and useful. Give it 42 to 48 inches of clear space below, and mount it 12 inches off the wall so hangers hang straight.

On the dirty side, pull out hampers beat baskets. A 15 inch cabinet takes one bin, a 30 inch fits two so darks and lights sort themselves, on ball bearing glides since a hamper gets yanked. A 90 inch tall cabinet at the end swallows the vacuum and the ironing board.

How We Build Your Laundry Room, First Call to Final Install

  1. We measure the room, the machines, the vent and the water box
  2. We settle whether pedestals stay or go, since that decides counter height
  3. You get a layout with sizes, counter spec, hardware and a price
  4. Boxes and doors are built and finished in our shop
  5. Machines out, cabinetry in, counter set and scribed
  6. Machines back, doors adjusted, caulk and walkthrough

Most laundry rooms install in one to two days.

Laundry Room Cabinet Cost in Jacksonville

Scope Typical installed range
Laundry closet, two uppers and a shelf $900 to $1,900
Uppers over a side by side pair, 6 ft $1,800 to $3,400
Uppers, tall cabinet and folding counter $3,500 to $6,500
Full room with sink cabinet, hampers and counter $6,500 to $12,000

Three levers: counter material, tall and drawer cabinetry versus simple uppers, and whether plumbing moves for a sink. These are typical Northeast Florida ranges, and a firm number takes measuring the machines.

Humidity

Built for Florida's Climate

Wood gains and loses moisture with the air around it, and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook shows how much it swells and shrinks as a result. We plan every laundry room cabinets job for that movement: stable sheet goods, acclimated lumber, moisture-resistant material near slabs and wet rooms, and joints with room to move.

3 Heights

Fit to Your Actual Walls

Jacksonville homes range from plaster and concrete block to square new construction. We measure each opening at the floor, mid height and ceiling before building, then scribe the finished work to the wall. Depending on the piece, it is built in our shop and brought in finished or built on site in your home, so the fit stays tight either way.

What Jacksonville Homeowners Say

  • My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Klein Carpentry. We recently moved into our new home, and as most homeowners, we wanted to put our personal touch on it. Inspired by so many ideas from Pinterest and HGTV, like so many others, I had several ideas of how I envision what I wanted for our custom built-in. I spoke with Ray, who could also see my vision and transfer it to a 3D program for us to see visually. Well, I can't say enough of what a fantastic job both Ray and Nathan did. From the start of our project to the very end, they exceeded our expectations in every way possible. Words can't describe how their professionalism, commitment, and craftsmanship are genuine. Both Ray and Nathan are genuinely a pleasure to work with. They are two kind, sincere gentlemen who care about their work and the client's vision. They are punctual and reliable and went above and beyond to ensure that my built-ins were completed on time. With this said, we could not be happier with how they turned out. I can finally display my beautiful Disney collectible, which I had been put away for far too long. I highly recommend Klein Carpentry to anyone considering having any work done in theirs.

  • Very happy with the professional work done by Klein Carpentry. We had wood accents done for the entrance way, great room and master bedroom. Fantastic craftsmanship and took the time to make it look perfect. Also had ceiling beams placed in the great room and master bedroom. They really complete both rooms. Lastly had wood accents for the half bath in the living area. Made a noticeable difference. Would highly recommend Klein Carpentry, highly detailed and professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space do I need above a top loading washer?

Plan on 20 to 22 inches of clear height for the lid to open fully, which puts an upper cabinet no lower than about 58 inches off the floor. A shallow 12 inch box often clears where a 15 inch box will not.

Will laundry cabinets hold up in Florida humidity?

They will when they are built for it. We use plywood carcasses rather than particleboard, seal every cut edge, and put PVC or marine ply at the floor. The failures we replace are almost always a swollen particleboard bottom under a washer that leaked.

Do I need a plumber for a utility sink cabinet?

Yes, if the sink is going somewhere new. We build and set the cabinet and cut for the sink, and a licensed plumber makes the connections. If a laundry tub is already there, we build around the existing rough-in.

Can you build a folding counter over my machines?

Yes, if they are front loaders. Side by side front loaders take a counter at about 37 to 38 inches, which folds comfortably. Pedestals raise the tops to roughly 50 inches, so we either remove them or move the folding surface beside the machines.

Can you put real cabinets in a laundry closet?

Usually yes, and it is a good value upgrade in an older Southside or Arlington house. The limits are depth and the bifold door stack. Swapping bifolds for a slider often buys enough width to make cabinetry work.

Is this the same as a mudroom?

No, and they stay separate even when they share a wall. A mudroom bench and locker run handles coats, shoes and bags at the door, while laundry cabinetry is sized around machines and water.
