Shaker Style Cabinets in Jacksonville, FL

Shaker cabinet doors are a five piece frame and panel: two vertical stiles, two horizontal rails, and a flat center panel that floats in a groove. No profile on the inside edge, no raised field, no applied carving. The panel is flat so the door reads as one plane with a recess in the middle.

The details that actually vary are panel thickness, inside edge treatment, and frame width. A 1/4 inch flat plywood panel is the standard. Bumping it to 3/8 or 1/2 inch makes the recess shallower and the door heavier, which changes shadow more than most people expect.

The inside edge is where good shops and factories separate. A dead square inside edge on the bottom rail gives you a flat dust ledge about as wide as the panel recess is deep. In a working kitchen that ledge collects crumbs and grease film. We usually break that edge with a light chamfer or a small eased radius, which keeps the square look and lets a rag clear it in one pass.

This is the single most useful thing on this page. Stock shaker is almost always a 2 1/4 inch frame on every side, top to bottom, on every door in the kitchen. It is fine. It is also why stock shaker looks like stock shaker.

Two more moves matter. First, a wider bottom rail: keeping stiles and the top rail at 2 1/4 inches and running the bottom rail at 3 inches gives the door a visual base, the same way a taller baseboard grounds a wall. Second, holding frame width constant across every door in the run instead of scaling it. On a 12 inch wide door a 2 1/4 inch frame leaves 7 1/2 inches of panel, and on a 24 inch door it leaves 19 1/2. That inconsistency is what makes a wall of shaker look busy, and fixing it costs nothing but layout time.

On drawer fronts, frame width has a hard limit. A 5 inch tall drawer front with 2 1/4 inch rails leaves a half inch sliver of panel, which looks like a mistake. Under about 6 inches we either narrow the rails to 1 3/4 inches or switch that drawer to a slab front, which is a common and entirely correct move in custom drawer boxes and fronts.

If you want more shadow than a plain shaker gives, you have two roads. A true flat panel with a wider frame keeps the style honest. Applied moulding, where a small profile is mitered and glued inside the frame opening, pushes the door toward traditional and adds a second surface to clean.

Applied moulding adds roughly 15 to 25 percent to door cost and adds miter joints that can open slightly as seasons change. In an unconditioned or lightly conditioned space we skip it.

White shaker cabinets are the default request, and for paint the species under the paint matters more than the color on top.

Shaker in oak and shaker in maple are not the same door. Oak's open pores catch light across a flat panel and give the style a texture that maple simply does not have. Under paint, those same pores show as fine lines within a year or two, so painted oak needs a grain filler step that adds cost. If you want painted white shaker, we build the frames in soft maple with a plywood panel. If you want visible grain, white oak with a clear conversion finish is where we would put your money. Existing doors in decent shape can often go the cabinet refinishing route instead.

Modern shaker cabinets are usually the same door with three changes: narrower frames, full overlay so almost no face frame shows, and hardware that is either long thin pulls or nothing at all with a push latch. Push it further and you get frameless construction, flat panel doors edge to edge, and a matte finish that absorbs light.

Traditional shaker goes the other direction: wider frames, a visible face frame reveal, inset or partial overlay doors, and cup pulls or knobs in unlacquered brass. If you are chasing the flush look, read the inset cabinetry page first, because that decision costs more than the door style does.

A shaker kitchen lives or dies on the run, not the single door. We lay out door and drawer sizes so that repeated widths land near each other, and we avoid a single odd 9 inch filler door next to a 21 inch one.

End panels are the giveaway. A finished end with a matching shaker frame, panel and all, is what separates custom from stock with a flat skin glued on. Same for the island: applied frames on the back side, sized to match the door frames, make the island read as furniture. Shaker cabinets are not the right answer everywhere. In a truly modern Jacksonville build with slab doors and a waterfall counter, adding shaker uppers makes the kitchen look undecided. In a 1920s bungalow in Springfield with original casing and picture rail, a plain shaker door can read too plain next to real period trim, where a beaded or applied moulding door sits better.

We start in your kitchen with a tape and a laser, not a catalog. You see full scale samples of 1 3/4, 2 1/4 and 2 3/4 inch frames on a real door so the proportion choice is made with your eyes, not a spec sheet.

From there we draw elevations, confirm every door and drawer size, and order material. Shop build typically runs three to six weeks depending on backlog and finish. Painted work gets sprayed in the shop, not on site, which is why the finish is cleaner. Install for a standard kitchen is two to four days, and then we set hardware and adjust every hinge.

Three things move the number: species and finish, whether the layout is full overlay or inset, and how much of the job is drawers rather than doors. Drawers cost more than doors every time because of the box and the glide. These are typical Northeast Florida ranges, and an exact number takes a visit and a measurement.
