Most homeowners get told to pick shoe mold or quarter round without hearing how they differ. On a Florida slab, the wrong pick can pin your floor down.
The shoe mold vs. quarter round question comes down to shape. Quarter round is a quarter circle, usually 3/4 inch square. Shoe mold is taller than it is deep, commonly 3/4 by 1/2 inch, with a flatter face.
Because it is thinner front to back, shoe mold reads as part of the baseboard and flexes along a wavy floor or bowed wall, which describes most of Riverside and Avondale. Quarter round is stiffer, hides a bigger gap, and lays flat on a slab.

Quarter round trim hides an expansion gap. Any floating floor, which means most LVP and all laminate, gets laid with a gap at every wall so the planks can move. Hardwood needs the same relief; tile usually does not.
Jacksonville summers raise indoor humidity even in a conditioned house, and a long run of LVP grows as one field. The trim covers that gap without holding the floor still.
There is one clean way to skip it. If the crew undercuts the door casings, pulls the base, lays the floor, and resets the base on top, the baseboard covers the gap and you never install quarter round at all.
That looks better and costs more, since it means removing the base, patching and repainting. You cannot skip it once the base is already on the wall, and caulking the floor to the base is worse than nothing.
Good quarter round installation follows one rule: fasten to the baseboard, never to the floor. We shoot 18-gauge brads at a slight upward angle into the base. Nailing down through the shoe locks a floating floor, and a locked floor buckles in a hallway by the second summer.
Inside corners get coped, not mitered, so they stay tight as the wood moves. Outside corners get a glued 45-degree miter.
Pine and poplar shoe mold is cheap and paints beautifully, but it takes on moisture. In a house that swings between a sealed 74-degree summer and open windows in November, primed pine can shrink enough to open a hairline joint.
PVC shoe mold does not move with humidity at all, which makes it right for baths, laundry rooms and Beaches homes that get salt air through open sliders. For stained shoe mold matched to a wood floor, solid wood is still the only honest option.
On finish, painting the shoe mold to match the baseboard makes the base read taller, and it pairs with door and window casing in the same color. Matching the floor instead makes the floor look continuous, though nail holes are harder to hide.
A good shoe molding installer does not staple stock trim to a 1920s baseboard. Homes in Riverside, Avondale and Springfield often have base 6 or 7 inches tall with a milled cap, and standard half-inch shoe mold looks undersized against it.

18-Gauge Brads
Laminate and most LVP need room to expand, and trim nailed down into the floor takes that room away. A pinned floor can buckle in a hallway by its second summer. We angle 18-gauge brads slightly upward into the baseboard and never into the flooring, which also means nothing gets drilled into your concrete slab. If the base itself is loose on a block wall, we secure it before the new trim goes on.

The slimmer of the two profiles bends along wavy floors and blends into the baseboard, which suits older houses. The rounder, stiffer option covers a wider gap and sits well on a flat new slab. When a 1920s base stands 6 or 7 inches tall, standard trim looks too small beside it, so we rip a taller piece or have a knife made to match. Usually yes, if the floor went in after the baseboards were on the wall. The flooring crew has to leave an expansion gap, and the shoe mold covers it. The alternative is pulling and resetting the base.
Yes, and it is the most common situation here. The trim nails into the baseboard, not the slab, so nothing gets drilled into concrete. If the base is loose on a block wall, we secure that first.
We match them. In older Riverside and Avondale homes, we rip a taller shoe to keep the scale right or have a knife made to match the original profile.
Solid wood shoe mold can open slightly at the joints as indoor humidity swings. Coped corners and a caulked top reduce that to almost nothing. PVC does not move at all, which is why we use it near the Beaches.
One room takes a couple of hours, and a Jacksonville three-bedroom home takes about a day plus a half day for paint. Corner count drives the labor more than total length.
