Profile is the shape in cross section, and size matters just as much. A 3 inch crown in a 10-foot room disappears, and a 7 inch crown in an 8-foot hall swallows it.

Cove reads quiet and modern, ogee is the traditional S-curve most homes wear well, and built-up crown stacks pieces for a shadow line that makes a nine-foot room feel taller.
You do not need to install crown molding everywhere, and we often talk people out of it. Public rooms earn it: living room, dining room, entry and primary bedroom. Kitchens are the argument worth having, since upper cabinets with their own cabinet crown already make wall crown look busy.

Painted crown suits most homes here because paint hides the joints. Stained crown is unforgiving, since every seam shows.
Crown molding installers who only work new construction get surprised by Riverside, Avondale and San Marco. Walls are not plumb, ceilings dip, corners are rarely 90 degrees, and plaster over lath is common. Stock crown looks wrong in a 1920s bungalow, so we match what is there from stacked pieces.
