The profile is the trim shape in cross section. The reveal is the sliver of jamb left exposed, usually 3/16 to 1/4 inch, and it keeps the line crisp when a jamb sits proud of the wall.

Butt-and-block joints hold up better than miters over time, which is why craftsman trim ages well here. Size trim as a system: base taller than the casing is wide, crown molding scaled to the ceiling.

Craftsman window casing runs wide flat legs, a stool and apron below, and a head casing on top. With no miter to open up, movement shows as a hairline, not a gaping V.

A light version pairs 3 1/2 inch legs with a 4 1/2 inch head. The heavier version runs 5 1/2 inch legs with a stacked head and cap for tall front rooms. On a Riverside bungalow, craftsman casing is often what the house originally wore.

Window casing installation starts at the bottom. Set the stool level with horns past the legs, tuck the apron under, and every joint above falls into place.

Older Jacksonville openings are rarely square, so we check each with a level, shim the jamb, and cut a compensating angle rather than force a bad miter.

Door casing installation has one extra demand: the reveal must read the same on both sides, since from a hallway you see both at once. We mark reveals with a combination square, not by eye. Nocatee and Bartram Park want the opposite: flat stock, square edges, wider legs. Simpler, but tolerances are tighter with no ornament hiding a sloppy cut.
