A prehung door arrives hung on a new jamb with the hinges already mortised in. Prehung door installation means pulling the old jamb and casing, setting the unit plumb and square, shimming, fastening, and re-trimming both sides. A slab is just the door: it reuses your jamb, so we mortise the hinges to match and bore for the latch.

Slabs look cheaper and sometimes are the right call, but a racked jamb passes its problem on to the new slab.

When we install interior doors, sequence beats speed. The hinge jamb goes in first, plumbed both ways and shimmed behind each hinge so the screws land on solid backing.

We set a 1/8 inch reveal at the head and strike, then check that the door holds its position anywhere in its swing. A door that creeps open has an out-of-plumb jamb, not a bad door. Long screws through the top hinge into the king stud keep heavy doors from sagging.

This is the decision most homeowners skip and then notice daily. A hollow-core door is two thin skins over a cardboard honeycomb. A solid-core door has an engineered core and weighs three times as much.

Sound is why most people upgrade. A solid-core door between a bedroom and a living room where the TV runs at night makes a real difference. The trade-off is weight: it needs a shimmed jamb and long hinge screws or it sags.

Older Jacksonville homes settle, and the framing goes with them. We regularly measure openings here that are 3/8 inch or more out of square corner to corner, with leaning jambs and sagging headers.

A prehung unit dropped into that binds at a top corner or shows a wedge-shaped gap along the strike. The fix is not force. Any interior door installer can hang a door. What separates them is the edges of the job: the crooked opening, the trim repair, the floor cut. Ask these questions before you sign:

• Does it include removing and disposing of the old doors?
• Is new casing included on both sides?
• Who patches the drywall where trim comes off?
• Are hinges and handles included?
• Is an out-of-square opening a change order?
• Is a floor-height cut priced in?

A quote that answers those has a real number behind it. One that just says "install doors" grows on install day.

Replacing a door in an existing opening is non-structural finish work and needs no permit in Duval County. You are not touching the envelope, the structure, or wind-load requirements.

Newer subdivisions get the same package: hollow-core, flat or two-panel, thin hardware, standard 30 and 32 inch widths. Nothing is wrong with them structurally. They just feel cheap.
