You have a room that has to do two jobs. Most weeks it is an office, and a few times a year it is where your mother-in-law sleeps. A Murphy bed in Jacksonville, FL solves that without giving up the floor, and it is one of the built-in carpentry projects our crew builds most often.
A boxed unit arrives in one width and one finish, and you shim it until it stands straight against a wall that is not straight. We size the cabinetry to your room and anchor it into whatever the wall is made of. That matters here, because a lot of Jacksonville houses are concrete block, and block does not take a lag screw the way a stud does.
A custom Murphy bed is sized to your ceiling, your baseboard, and your door swing. With 9-foot ceilings in a Nocatee flex room, we run the surround high and pick up the extra height as closed storage. With an 8-foot ceiling in a San Marco bungalow, we keep the cabinet lower and wider so the room does not feel squeezed.
We also build around obstacles. Return air grilles, a low window, an off-center closet door: these are what make a kit unusable and a built unit work fine.

Vertical beds fold along the head and need roughly 84 to 86 inches of ceiling height for a queen. Horizontal beds fold sideways and drop that to about 60 inches, which is why they suit a bonus room over a garage.
Most clients want a Murphy bed with cabinets rather than a bare bed box, and that is where the piece stops looking like furniture. Bookcase towers give you display at eye level, and a drawer base handles linens. Upper cabinets above the bed box are the most overlooked square footage in the room, and they are right for things you touch twice a year. We can also run integrated LED lighting into the surround so the guest side has a reading light without a nightstand lamp.
A built-in Murphy bed should look framed into the house, and you get there with trim, not hardware. We scribe the cabinet sides so there is no daylight gap where the wall bellies out, and we return the existing baseboard into the cabinet base so the toe kick lines up with the room.
Then we carry your crown profile across the top, mitered and coped, so the cabinet dies into the ceiling the way the room does. It is the same discipline as our custom built-ins and built-in bookcases.
Riverside and Avondale guest rooms are often 10 by 11 feet with a window on one wall and a closet on another, leaving one usable wall. There we go shallow, around 16 inches deep, and skip the side towers so the bed opens freely. Nocatee flex rooms have the opposite problem: too much wall and nothing anchoring it, so we build the full unit with towers and crown.
Murphy bed installation is an anchoring job first and a cabinet job second. A queen unit puts real load into the wall every time it swings, and the hardware schedule assumes solid backing.
In wood-framed homes we locate studs, add blocking where the cleats miss framing, and lag into solid wood. Block is different. Most older Jacksonville homes and many beach houses are block with 1x2 furring strips and drywall over them, and those strips will not hold a bed. We drill through into the block and set masonry anchors in the solid web, not a hollow cell.
Then we shim. Furred block walls can leave the drywall face 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches off the block, and if the cabinet is not packed solid behind every anchor you are pulling into air. Pistons also need the cabinet square, since they are tuned to lift a set weight through a set arc.
Jacksonville runs high humidity for months, and homes near the water in Jacksonville Beach or Ponte Vedra get salt air on top of it. That combination goes after metal and panel edges.
For hardware we specify powder-coated or zinc-plated mechanisms rather than bare steel, and stainless fasteners near the coast. Gas pistons are the wear item on any wall bed, and corroded rods kill them early. For cabinetry we use furniture-grade plywood rather than particleboard, which swells at the edges and never recovers, with a catalyzed or waterborne finish instead of thin off-the-shelf enamel.
We start with a walkthrough. We measure floor to ceiling in several spots, check whether your walls are block or frame, and ask who sleeps in this bed and how often. From there we give you a fixed proposal covering style, surround, finish, and price, and we can produce 3D design renderings of the room with the bed open and closed. Install is typically one to two days: set and anchor the cabinet, hang the mechanism, fit the bed box, balance the pistons, then trim, caulk, and touch up.

Three things move the number most: the mechanism, the cabinetry around it, and the finish. Stained hardwood costs more than paint in both material and labor, and block-wall anchoring adds for hardware and time. These are typical Northeast Florida ranges, not a quote, and an exact number takes seeing the space.
Block or Stud
A folding queen loads the wall every time it swings, so mounting comes before cabinetry. In framed houses we find studs and add blocking wherever the cleats miss the framing. On furred concrete block, the strips alone cannot carry a bed, so we drill through to the masonry, set anchors in the solid part of the block rather than a hollow cell, and pack shims tight behind each one so nothing pulls against empty space.
Crown to Base
We scribe the cabinet sides to the wall so no gap shows where the drywall bows, and your existing baseboard returns into the cabinet base so the toe kick lines up with the room. Across the top we carry the same crown profile you already have, so the unit meets the ceiling the way your other walls do. Bookcase towers, a drawer base for linens and uppers above the bed box can turn it into real storage.

Very happy with the professional work done by Klein Carpentry. We had wood accents done for the entrance way, great room and master bedroom. Fantastic craftsmanship and took the time to make it look perfect. Also had ceiling beams placed in the great room and master bedroom. They really complete both rooms. No. A wall bed is furniture and cabinetry, not structure, so the City of Jacksonville does not require a permit for the installation itself. If your project also involves moving an outlet or adding a circuit for lighting, that electrical work is permitted and we coordinate a licensed electrician.
Yes, and it is routine here. We drill through the drywall and furring into the block, set masonry anchors in the solid portion of the block, and shim solid behind every anchor point so the cabinet bears evenly. Done right, a block-mounted unit is at least as solid as one lagged to studs.
A standard mattress up to about 12 inches thick and within the mechanism's weight rating. Most foam and hybrid mattresses in the 8 to 12 inch range work well. We stay away from very heavy innerspring mattresses because they push the pistons past what they are tuned for.
Almost never. HOA covenants in Nocatee, Bartram Park, and similar communities govern exterior appearance, not interior cabinetry. The exception is a condo where anchoring into a shared demising wall may be restricted, so it is worth a quick check with your association before we drill.
A vertical queen needs roughly 84 to 86 inches of clear ceiling. If your room is under that, or if you have a sloped bonus room ceiling, a horizontal twin or full works in about 60 inches and gives you the same floor space back.
