The bracket shelf you hung last spring has a bow in the middle and a gap along the wall. That is the usual reason someone calls us about floating shelves in Jacksonville, FL, and shelving is one of the cabinet and shelving services we handle week in and week out. A shelf that floats has nothing under it, so all of its strength comes from how it is built and how it is anchored.
Big box shelves are hollow boxes on a thin metal plate, good for a few picture frames. Ours are solid stock carried on steel rod, and they hold what you actually put on a shelf: stacked plates, cast iron, books. We build them to your wall, your finish, and your load.
Wood floating shelves live or die on material choice, and Northeast Florida is hard on the wrong one. Indoor humidity swings through the year, and a shelf that is not dried and built correctly will cup within a season.

MDF is why so many floating shelves in Florida homes sag. It has no grain to resist bending, and once the core takes on moisture the edge swells and never flattens.
For solid wood, how the board was cut matters. Quartersawn and rift stock moves less across its width than plainsawn, which shows up on a 12 inch deep shelf. We also finish all six faces, including the back edge nobody sees, so moisture enters and leaves the board evenly.
Custom floating shelves start with a hidden steel bracket: solid rods, usually 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch, welded to a plate that lags into framing or anchors into block. The shelf is bored to match, then driven onto the rods and locked.
That is why the load numbers differ. A hollow shelf on a hanger strip is good for maybe 15 to 25 pounds spread out. A 2 inch thick hardwood shelf on three 5/8 inch rods, anchored into solid framing, carries 75 to 100 pounds on a 36 inch span.
Span is the other variable. Every foot between supports cuts what a shelf can carry, so a long run gets thicker stock or more rods. We would rather tell you a 7-foot shelf needs to be 2-1/2 inches thick than hang something that fails in a year.
Most kitchen shelves land at 10 to 12 inches deep, which holds dinner plates and bowls. Living room and office shelves run 8 to 10 inches. Deeper than 12 and a shelf feels like a cabinet with the doors missing.
Vertical spacing is where people go wrong. We set 14 to 16 inches between kitchen shelves and 12 to 14 inches for display shelving, and the bottom shelf over a counter should clear the backsplash by at least 18 inches. Three shelves is usually the maximum on one wall before it reads busy.
Built-in floating shelves work differently from room to room. In a kitchen they flank a range hood or replace upper cabinets, and they need a durable topcoat to survive steam and grease. In a bath, a shelf beside a vanity needs a sealed finish and hardware that will not rust.
Living rooms are the most common request, usually flanking a fireplace or a television, and they pair well with an electric fireplace feature wall or custom built-ins.
Laundry rooms are the practical win. A shelf at 66 inches off the floor clears a front-load washer and gives you detergent storage without a wall cabinet crowding the room. In a pantry, open shelving on rods beats wire racks, which is part of what we do with custom pantry shelving.
Floating shelf installation is really a wall assessment. Three kinds of walls are common around Jacksonville, and each one gets a different anchor.
Modern stud framing in Nocatee and St. Johns is the easiest case. We locate studs and lag the plate through drywall into at least two. If the shelf does not line up with studs at 16 inches on center, we open the drywall, add blocking, then patch.
Plaster over wood lath in older Riverside and Avondale homes needs a lighter touch. Plaster crumbles when you drive a lag into it dry, so we pre-drill through the plaster and lath, land in the stud behind, and snug the plate without crushing the surface. We never rely on lath alone.
Concrete block takes masonry anchors set into the solid part of the block. Because block walls are usually furred out, the plate sits off the block behind the drywall, so we pack the gap with shims or a plywood backer. Skip that and the shelf droops.
A floating shelf installer who builds the shelf, builds the bracket, and sets it in one visit is solving a different problem than a handyman hanging a purchased unit. When shelf and steel are made for each other, rod spacing matches the studs and depth matches your plates.
There is also the wall itself. Almost no wall is flat or plumb over 8 feet, so we scribe the back edge of the shelf to sit tight, which is why custom work has no caulk line telegraphing the gap. Next to other millwork we match your existing stain or sheen, which matters most beside custom cabinetry.
We come out, look at the wall, and knock on it. That tells us block or frame, and a stud finder plus a small inspection hole confirms the framing. We measure the run, talk through depth and spacing, and pick a species and finish.
Depending on the project, some pieces are built in our shop and some are built on site in your home. Shop-built shelves take one to three weeks: solid hardwood gets milled, rested, and milled again so it stays flat, and stain and topcoat add days. Install is usually a half day for two or three shelves: lay out and level the brackets, anchor them, dry-fit each shelf, then set and lock them, patch, and touch up.

Three things move these numbers: species, thickness, and how difficult the wall is. Walnut costs multiples of poplar, a 2-1/2 inch shelf uses more stock and heavier rod than a 1-3/4 inch shelf, and block anchoring or plaster repair adds labor. These are typical Jacksonville ranges, and an exact number requires seeing the space.

Nothing under a floating shelf helps carry weight, so the strength is in a concealed steel bracket: solid rods welded to a plate that is fastened to framing or block. The shelf is bored to match, driven onto the rods and locked. A hollow store-bought shelf on a hanger strip manages roughly 15 to 25 pounds, while a 2 inch hardwood shelf on three 5/8 inch rods can hold 75 to 100 pounds across 36 inches.
Quartersawn
Poorly chosen boards cup within a season in Northeast Florida, and MDF sags under dishes and swells once wet, so we leave it out. Quartersawn and rift boards shift less across their width than plainsawn stock, a difference you can see on a 12 inch deep shelf. Hardwood is milled, left to rest and milled again before finishing, and every face gets coated, including the back edge against the wall, so moisture moves in and out evenly.
3 Wall Types
Most failures start at the wall, not the wood. On newer stud walls we lag the bracket plate into at least two studs, adding blocking when the layout misses them. Plaster over lath gets pre-drilled so it does not crumble, with fasteners landing in the stud behind. Block takes masonry anchors in the solid web, plus shims or a plywood backer where furring leaves a gap. The back edge is then scribed so the shelf sits tight without a caulk line.

A properly built solid wood shelf on steel rods anchored into framing carries roughly 75 to 100 pounds over a 36 inch span. Load capacity drops as the span grows, so a longer shelf needs thicker stock or more rods. The shelf is almost never the weak point. The anchoring is.
Yes. We drill into the solid web of the block, set masonry anchors, and shim the bracket plate solid so it bears flat behind the drywall. Block walls actually hold very well once anchored correctly, often better than a single stud.
Ten to twelve inches handles standard dinner plates, bowls, and glassware with room to reach in. Eight inches works for a decorative run or a narrow wall. Anything past twelve gets in the way when you are working at the counter.
Not if the material and finish are right. We use stable stock, finish every face including the hidden back edge, and avoid MDF entirely, which is what usually cups in a Jacksonville kitchen. Sealing all six sides lets moisture move in and out of the board evenly.
Plaster and lath are fine to work with as long as we pre-drill and land the fasteners in the framing behind. We drill rather than drive to avoid cracking the plaster face, and we patch and touch up any exploratory holes before we leave.
Usually, yes. We bring samples, test on offcuts of the same species, and adjust until the color and sheen read correctly under your lighting. An exact match across different species is harder, so we sometimes recommend a deliberate contrast instead.
