The Florida detail that matters most: thermofoil comes apart at heat, so it is the wrong door beside a wall oven or a dishwasher vent.
People say laminate cabinets and mean any of the three. How each is made explains the rest.
Melamine, properly thermally fused laminate, is decorative paper fused onto particleboard or MDF, and the sheet arrives finished. High pressure laminate is its own sheet, kraft paper plus a decorative layer pressed hard, then glued to a substrate in the shop, so it is thicker and tougher. Thermofoil is vinyl film vacuum pressed over routed MDF.

Thermofoil cabinets fail by delamination at heat. The adhesive softens and the film lifts at an edge. It shows up beside a wall oven, under a cooktop, and next to a dishwasher vent, at sustained surface temperatures around 150 to 175 degrees.
That failure is not repairable, so the door gets replaced, and because color lots shift one door often will not match its neighbors.
Two cheap defenses: a heat barrier on the cabinet face by the oven cavity, and no longer propping the dishwasher open to vent.
Melamine cabinets fail at the substrate, not the surface. If water gets past a cut edge into particleboard, the board swells and never comes back flat, a real risk in a Jacksonville laundry room or a garage that hits 80 percent humidity in August.
Two standard fixes: moisture resistant substrate within splash range, and a banded edge on every cut. An unbanded bottom edge on a damp slab is how melamine dies here.
High pressure laminate cabinetry is only as good as its edges, and the edge is where laminate gives itself away. HPL shrugs off heat and water, then fails by chipping at an unprotected edge.

For anything that gets bumped we spec 2 mm or thicker. A 0.4 mm tape edge on a garage drawer front chips within a year.
Laminate cabinet doors get dismissed as budget, and in a formal kitchen they are the wrong look. In several Jacksonville rooms they beat wood.
Garages are the clearest case: an unconditioned garage swings across a wide humidity range all year and painted wood eventually checks, which is how we build most garage cabinets. Laundry rooms are second, since laminate wipes clean of bleach, and our laundry room cabinets pair laminate interiors with painted fronts. Commercial casework is third, rentals fourth.
We steer people away from laminate in traditional kitchens, inset work, and rooms where a color change is likely, since laminate cannot be repainted the way wood can.
We measure the room, then draw the layout with the substrate and edge spec written on it, so you see what goes where.
In the shop, sheets are cut oversize, pressed or banded, then trimmed, and every cut edge is banded before a part leaves the bench. Thermofoil doors come from a supplier, since vacuum pressing is a specialty operation.
Install runs one to three days for a garage or laundry, and we scribe to the walls, which matters in older Arlington homes.

Heat softened the adhesive under the vinyl film. Once it lifts it cannot be reglued invisibly, so the fix is a new door plus a heat barrier inside the cabinet.
The faces will, better than painted wood. The risk is the substrate: a cut edge that stays wet swells permanently. We use moisture resistant substrate and keep boxes off the slab.
HPL faced cabinetry commonly runs 15 to 25 years and holds up in commercial use. Thermofoil is the short one, often 8 to 15 years, and less beside a heat source.
Not quite. Melamine is paper fused to the board, while high pressure laminate is a thicker separate sheet glued on afterward. HPL is tougher, so melamine goes on interiors and HPL on exposed faces.
Not reliably. Paint has nothing to bite into on a slick vinyl surface, and even with bonding primer it chips at the edges.
