A slat wall in Jacksonville, FL is one of the fastest interior wall carpentry projects we do, and it changes a room more per dollar than almost anything else. We build decorative interior slat and fluted walls for living rooms, offices and entries, not garage slatwall with hooks.
A wood slat wall is a run of narrow strips, 1 to 2 inches wide, spaced evenly over a backer. The gap is the design: that shadow line makes the wall read as texture, not stripes. Most of ours are solid slats glued and pinned to a dense felt panel, which absorbs sound and hides the drywall behind.
Fluted wall panels are the other build: the profile is milled into a single sheet, so the face is continuous with no gap behind it. Slats read sharper; flutes read softer, which suits dining rooms and entries at wainscot height.
Fluted panels are usually MDF, which is stable in width but hungry for water at the edges and bottom. In a bath, a laundry, or against a block wall that sweats, we switch to PVC-core or poplar.
Indoor humidity stays high for months, and anything on a wall moves. Solid slats are the safer bet: movement across a 1.5-inch face is fractions of a millimeter, and the gaps absorb it. We let material sit in the house for days before cutting and seal the back and edges of any painted panel.

A slat accent wall earns its keep where there is already a focal point: behind a bed, behind a television, or on the first wall you see from the front door.
Full height is the stronger look and the easier install; partial height works above a chair rail and pairs with board and batten below. Vertical slats make a room feel taller in older homes with 8-foot ceilings.
Spacing separates current from dated. We like a slat 1.5 inches wide with a 0.5- to 0.75-inch gap. Wider gaps look like a fence; slats over 3 inches with tight gaps look like 1970s paneling. White oak with a clear finish is the most forgiving choice.
In open-concept new builds around Nocatee and Bartram Park, felt-backed panels do real acoustic work, since those great rooms have tall ceilings and hard floors.
Slat wall installation is straightforward on flat drywall. We find studs, snap plumb lines, and fasten into framing with adhesive and pins.
Textured drywall is the common Jacksonville wrinkle. Knockdown keeps a backer from sitting flat, and high spots show as waves once the slats are on, so we skim the wall or fur out a level plane.
Block is the other. Plenty of Jacksonville and Beaches homes from the 1950s through the 1970s are block with thin furring. We anchor a grid of treated or PVC strips into it for fastening and an air gap. Where the wall meets a ceiling treatment, we plan the transition so the slat tops die into it cleanly.
We start with a visit to measure, check for texture and find the studs. Raking afternoon light shows every shadow line, so light direction matters.
Then you get a layout with slat width, gap and count, a fixed price and a finish sample. Depending on the project, some pieces are milled and prefinished in our shop and others are built on site in your home. Installation on a 12-by-9-foot wall runs one to two days.

Those figures assume a 10- to 12-foot wall, and species is the biggest lever. Wall prep is second, since furring adds labor before a single slat goes up. These are typical Northeast Florida ranges rather than a quote; we give a firm number after we measure.
1.5 In Slats
The gap between slats does the design work, since that shadow line turns stripes into texture. Our usual layout pairs a slat an inch and a half wide with a half to three quarter inch gap. Open the gaps wider and the wall starts to look like a fence; go past three inches with tight gaps and it drifts toward old paneling. Before install you see the width, gap and slat count on a drawn layout, along with a finish sample.
Felt Backed
Many of our solid slats are glued and pinned over a dense felt backer, which hides the drywall and soaks up the harsh echo that bounces around rooms with tile floors and high ceilings. Open plans in Nocatee and Bartram Park benefit most. Felt will not stop sound traveling through to the next room, but it takes the edge off a space that currently sounds hollow, and white oak over felt stays warm and forgiving to live with.

On older block homes with thin furring, we anchor a grid of treated or PVC strips for solid fastening and an air gap. A felt-backed slat wall makes a noticeable dent in echo in open rooms with tile floors and tall ceilings. It absorbs the frequencies that make a room feel harsh, but it will not block sound through the wall.
Slats are separate strips with a real gap between them, over a felt or wood backer. Fluted panels are one sheet with channels milled into the face, so there is no gap.
Yes, and it is common here. We skim the texture flat or fur out a level plane so the finished panel is straight, rather than fastening slats to knockdown texture.
